and Travis Mathews' gay erotic drama, Interior. Leather Bar. has secured US distribution through Strand Releasing. Franco's project premiered at Berlin Film Festival and Sundance Film Festival in 2013, but will now face North American release either late this year or early 2014.
Interior. Leather Bar. is inspired by the deleted footage - purportedly a full 40 minutes' worth - from Cruising, the 1980 thriller which saw go undercover to root out a serial killer in a gay S&M bar. However, Critic John DeFore opined at Sundance that Interior. Leather Bar. 'isn't as provocative as some may expect, which will probably suit [Franco's] fans just fine.'
Franco and Mathews appear delighted with Strand Releasing acquiring the rights to their gay leather movie. Mathews praised Strand for their 'long history of pioneering queer art films,' and Franco is similarly enthused:
I am so excited and pleased that this unusual film has found the perfect home. We are so proud of this and happy to be working with Strand Releasing.
