If there's one thing we've learned about James Gunn, it's that he has little patience for fan theories or, as he calls them, "dumb stuff on the internet."

Ever since Guardians of the Galaxy became the surprise hit of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gunn has become one of Marvel's champions. So his lack of patience is understandable, in a way. Being at the helm of one of Marvel Studios' most popular properties must bring with it an inundation of questioning and speculation, and Gunn is one of a few who is very active with his fans, often taking to Facebook to answer questions and address commenters.

Gunn has never been shy when it comes to addressing extra-textual references in his world, specifically Easter Eggs. And like all good comic book movies, Guardians of the Galaxy is chock full of them.

Fans have spent the last two years picking apart the movie to find them all, but Gunn has been outspoken about the fact that there's one big Easter Egg yet to be uncovered in Guardians of the Galaxy.

" There’s definitely one really big thing that people haven’t seen, but they may never see it — we’ll see."

Gunn is a good sport though — while he's not telling what the final reference is, he has promised to reveal when and if someone manages to guess it correctly. As of now, Gunn maintains that still nobody has spotted it. And he's so adamant that it does exist that he's putting his money where his mouth is — quite a lot of money actually.

Taking to Facebook again in an impromptu Q&A earlier this week, Gunn got chatting with fans in the comments section.

Some interesting things came out in this session — from Gunn admitting that he would've been screwed if 20th Century Fox hadn't agreed to let Marvel Studios and Disney use the rights for Ego the Living Planet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, to the revelation that his favorite birds are crows, not parrots.

But of course, once again the question of the mystery Easter Egg was raised, with one commenter asking if Gunn ever planned on revealing the final piece of the puzzle. Gunn replied, "No, I don't plan on revealing it," which prompted another fan to comment, "He won't reveal it because it doesn't exist," calling Gunn "The ultimate troll."

Not one to take such things lying down, the director rose to the challenge Gunns blazing. Posting a selfie (in which he looks weirdly like DC TV's Harrison Wells... No, just me?) he responded by claiming that he would pay the accuser $100,000 if it turned out there was no final Easter Egg yet to be uncovered in Guardians.

Of course, Gunn's money is pretty safe. Actually proving that the mystery Easter Egg does not exist is a nigh on impossible task, unless you could take someone containing intimate knowledge of every Marvel comic book ever, and get them to comb through Guardians of the Galaxy frame by fame, inch by inch...

Wait, hang on a minute. Someone get Stan Lee on the phone — we've got this.

What do you think the final Guardians of the Galaxy Easter Egg is? Do you think it really exists? Sound off in the comments, and check out the amazing teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. below!
