Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is in theaters everywhere, and fans couldn’t be more thrilled with the second installment of the franchise. James Gunn delivered everything that fans loved about the first Guardians of the Galaxy, but added more heart, which made us fall in love with the characters even more — especially Baby Groot.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 premiered to outstanding box office numbers, and the film's director #JamesGunn is using his big moment to spread a positive, heartfelt message. He is always very active with his fans on social media, but his recent Facebook post truly showed just how much he appreciates them.
James Gunn Shares A Moving Message To Fans On Facebook
On May 6, 2017, James Gunn shared a beautiful Facebook post that blew his fans away. He was very honest about his interest in the film's box office numbers, but he quickly transitioned to his own personal feelings, and what has inspired him through this whole process:
"The first thing I do in the morning is roll over in bed and check my phone for the morning box office reports. But, in the end, it's not what matters to me. I write this now to let you know, but also to remind myself. Because I'm human and I sometimes forget. When I was young I felt utterly alone, at times to the point of suicidal thoughts. I never felt like I belonged, had an incredibly difficult time connecting to other people and, despite having love around me, I had an impossible time experiencing it, or taking it in."
He goes on to describe the things that influenced him as a creative, and the fantasy worlds he inhabited that made him feel like he belonged in the real world. He speaks of the joy Guardians of the Galaxy has brought him, and how it helped connect other people throughout the world. He goes on to talk about the Guardians themselves, and what they represent to him:
"They're a group of heartbroken misfits whose lives have been bereft of tenderness and connection and who have a nearly impossible time trusting themselves or others. But they're learning, one step at a time.
"They are me. They are you. We are Groot.
"And no matter how much world leaders are telling you we aren't in this together, we are. You are not alone."
Gunn concludes his post with a thank you to his fans and those that have supported him over the years. He also teased that he is headed back into the fire when he begins working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
The Importance Of James Gunn's Message
James Gunn’s post contained a lot of information, but it carried one very important theme throughout: unity. Gunn went out of his way to share his very intimate personal feelings with his fans. He bared his soul so that fans who feel misunderstood, like Gunn once did, will know they are not alone.
The simple notion that we are not alone in this world is a very powerful message, and it can serve as a beacon of hope for someone who truly needs it. Gunn talking about his own personal struggles might help fans who feel the same way he did, and the fact that Gunn took his past struggles and turned them into quantifiable success make his words even more poignant.
Gunn’s words can also be seen through his characters in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. All the characters in the Guardians are misfits, they feel like they don’t belong and are drifting through the galaxy alone. But they learn through each other that they are not alone, and that they are part of something bigger than themselves — and we feel real emotions for these characters.
James Gunn’s words were touching and show the care that he put into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. We live in a world where it is very easy to feel isolated, and though we can connect to people around the world on the internet, sometimes we forget that we are not alone — or that we are Groot.
We as fans are thankful that people like James Gunn are not afraid to share their stories, and help inspire a whole new generation of creators.
Make sure you catch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in theaters now!
