Other than the casting of Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane and Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, not much is known about X-Men: The New Mutants, Fox's upcoming X-Men spinoff featuring a younger team of students. It had been rumored that James McAvoy would bridge the films in the role of Professor Charles Xavier, but — according to Borys Kit of the Hollywood Reporter — that rumor is false. Kit posted a tweet revealing this tidbit:
In addition to debunking the rumor of McAvoy returning as Xavier for New Mutants, Kit appeared to clear up another casting rumor: Nat Wolff will not be playing Cannonball.
Rumors of Wolff playing Canonball were just that, rumors, so this news isn't too surprising. It's James McAvoy's absence that's more of a concern. McAvoy is signed on to return for #DarkPhoenix, which would be the last X-Men movie left on his contract, so does McAvoy's absence from New Mutants mean he hasn't renegotiated a deal for more movies?
If that's the case, then we may no longer see Professor X on-screen again — especially since Patrick Stewart has indicated that he's done with the role after Logan. McAvoy won over many fans as the younger Xavier, but could Fox possibly recast the beloved role?
Nothing is official yet, so it's possible that Kit's sources are wrong — fans are certainly hoping that's the case. Who knows? Perhaps McAvoy will be signed on at the last moment. If only we could read studio execs' minds!
X-Men: The New Mutants opens in theaters on April 13, 2018.
