Development on #Deadpool2 is going full throttle. Just last week, we got our first teaser for the film, and from recently-uncovered evidence, we have a pretty good idea of when the Merc with a Mouth will hit theaters. Aside from that, we've also had numerous casting rumors for two characters the sequel is introducing: Cable and Domino.
As you can imagine, the casting of both mutants has been a rollercoaster ride for fans. Back in January, a shortlist of ten actresses for Domino was released and it included names like Mackenzie Davis, Sienna Miller, Kelly Rohrbach and Ruby Rose. And later on, Kerry Washington was revealed to be the frontrunner for the gun-toting mutant.
But that might not the case anymore. If this latest report is to be believed, Fox has a new favorite actress for the lucky mutant. According to The Hashtag Show:
"Kerry Washington was in the lead for the role of Domino in 'Deadpool 2' [...] This is no longer the case. We have been informed by our source that the new frontrunner is none other than Janelle Monáe."
Who Is Janelle Monáe?
Monae is having herself a moment right now. You might have seen her in films like #HiddenFigures and #Moonlight in the last few months, both of which generated major Oscar buzz, with Moonlight winning Best Picture. She's also an accomplished singer, with six Grammy nominations under her belt and a critically-acclaimed album, The Electric Lady.
In fact, you might have heard her in Fun's 2012 breakout hit, We Are Young, in which she participated as a guest vocalist:
Now, obviously, as with any rumor, we should take this with a grain of salt. However, evidenced by Kerry Washington having been a frontrunner for the role, the people working on Deadpool 2 want a high-caliber actress for it; and with her appearances in the aforementioned films, Janelle definitely fits that category.

The majority of the movie-going audience are not familiar with Domino, so the character needs to be given her own voice (similar to what was done with #Deadpool) in order for people to fall in love with her. Naturally, not just any actor can pull that off. But Monáe has shown she has the talent to do it.
I must stress, keep in mind that it's not guaranteed that she will play the iconic mutant. Anything could change as the road to Deadpool 2 going into production gets shorter. With that said, she would definitely be an exciting addition to the highly-anticipated sequel.
Do you think Janelle Monae is our new Domino? How do you feel about Kerry Washington not being in the running anymore?
