Embodying a character like the Joker isn't easy. An actor has to convincingly portray insanity personified, while at the same time making sure to keep one's own sanity when the makeup comes off. For his take on the character in last year's Suicide Squad, Jared Leto was fully aware of that pressure, and he took the role quite seriously –– or rather, to the extreme.

Numerous reports were released about his insane antics on set in order to get into the mindset of the character. He reportedly stayed in character throughout the entirety of filming, and constantly treated his fellow cast members with gruesome "gifts" like used condoms, dead animals and sex toys.

From everything we heard, it seemed like Leto spent most of his downtime in a dark room, viciously plotting on how to disturb his co-stars even more. But as we recently learned, it looks like almost none of that actually happened.

Jared Leto Isn't Happy With All The Joker Rumors

stepped out to make it clear that he isn't a fan of all the chatter involving his acting practices. The actor recently took part in an interview with Kyle and Jackie O, an Australian radio show. There, he was asked about the constant rumors surrounding his possible exit from the , which started floating around after Leto expressed his disdain for the way Joker was treated in Suicide Squad.

Leto was quick to shut down the rumors, and went to reveal that almost all of the chatter about his extreme method acting were completely false:

"There's so much hype and so much bullshit around that, but I think it's just a fun thing to talk about. Even when the movie came out, there was so much misrepresentation about what went down about the method acting crap. You know, 90% of it was not even true. It just takes on a life of its own."

So case closed, Leto never actually made the Suicide Squad set feel like a real madhouse, right? Well, not exactly. You see, the method acting reports we got weren't rumors or unfounded internet chatter. They came from the actors and even Leto himself. In fact, the most extreme revelations came from him. During an interview with E! Online, the actor stated he sent used condoms and anal beads to the other actors, and explained:

"I did a lot of things to create a dynamic to create an element of surprise, a spontaneity and to really break down any kind of walls that may be there. The Joker is somebody who doesn't really respect things like personal space or boundaries."

As mentioned, his co-stars also had quite a few stories. During an interview with Vanity Fair, recalled that on the first day of rehearsal, Leto sent a henchman to give them a dead pig. Furthermore, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc) revealed that alongside the used condoms, he received some sticky playboy magazines.

What About The Method Acting?

After looking at those comments, I thought Leto's displeasure with the method acting reports may have stemmed from the rumors that he stayed as the Joker through the entire production process. But then I remembered that that was also revealed by the Suicide Squad crew. , for example, said that he never met the real Jared while filming was underway:

"We worked together for six months and we've never exchanged a word outside of 'action!' and 'cut!' We've never said 'hello,' we've never said 'good day.' I've only ever spoken to him as Deadshot and him as the Joker. I literally have not met him yet... Not a single word exchanged off-camera. He was all in on the Joker."

By now it's clear that the method acting info wasn't a wild rumor, so it's hard to tell why the actor called dismissed it that way. Now, that's not to say he's flat-out lying, or maybe he's just confusing everyone on purpose.

Leto has quite a busy road as the Joker ahead. He's set to reprise the role in , , and an untitled Harley Quinn/Joker spinoff, so it will be interesting to see whether any other reports about his acting practices surface by the time production on those projects kicks off.
