Despite being one of the most seminal horror franchises of all time, in terms of making the leap to Blu-ray, Friday the 13th has heretofore been released in various severed chunks. It was only a matter of time however before this hacked-up desecrated corpse reassembled and rose from the dead to slash its way back into our hearts and living rooms in high-definition. Warner Brothers has just announced the impending release of Friday the 13th: The Complete Collection. This 10 disc set gathers all twelve of the franchise films, both those that have previously hit Blu and those that have not, as well as a DVD bonus disc.
The collection contains (according to the press release):
· Disc 1 - Friday the 13th (1980)
· Disc 2 - Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)
· Disc 3 - Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D (1982)
· Disc 4 - Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984) NEW TO BLU-RAY
· Disc 5 - Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985) / Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) NEW TO BLU-RAY
· Disc 6 - Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988) / Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989) NEW TO BLU- RAY
· Disc 7 - Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993) / Jason X (2002) NEW TO BLU-RAY
· Disc 8 - Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
· Disc 9 - Friday the 13th (2009) (Theatrical Version and “Killer Cut” Extended Version)
· Disc 10 – Killer Bonus DVD Disc
In addition, the collection comes with a 40-page booklet and a Camp Crystal Lake counselor patch all contained within a collectible tin case. Friday the 13th: The Complete Collection will hit store shelves on September 13th; fittingly, a Friday.
I am pretty ecstatic about this announcement. Jason Voorhees' insatiable lust for teenage bloodletting, and his penchant for misuse of sporting equipment, was a most formidable component of my own horror fandom. Even the rankest, cheesiest entries in the series have forcibly carved themselves a little place in my black heart.
Friday the 13th Part 2--The actual first appearance of the iconic slasher Jason Voorhees.
Friday the 13th Part 3--Released in 3D
Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter--The end of "psycho redneck Jason"
Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives--The birth of "zombie wraith Jason"
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood--First appearance of in the role of Jason. Hodder would play the role three more times and become a fan favorite.
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday--First film in the franchise to be released by New Line Cinema as opposed to Paramount
Jason X--Jason goes to space, completing the trifecta of horror franchise desperation gimmicks. The other two are 3D (achieved in Part 3), and "I want your baby/I want to be reborn through you" (achieved in Jason Goes to Hell).
Freddy vs. Jason--The realization of a fan wet dream inspired a decade earlier by a cameo from Freddy's razor-tipped glove.
I am certainly going to pick up this collection, and I would advise you do the same for any horror buff in your life. Of course, no cursory overview of the Friday the 13th franchise would be complete without a personal ranking. Therefore, I leave you with my best-to-worst ordering of all the films in the set. Feel free to throw stones at me...or just give us your own order in the comment section.
