Almost three years ago, a hacker obtained over 500 intimate photos from mostly female celebrities and released the sensitive material online. Although there were many victims in the massive hack, Jennifer Lawrence was one of the celebrities hit the hardest, and the incident is something that she hasn’t forgotten.
Jennifer Lawrence Talks About How Her Leaked Nude Photos Still Haunt Her
The Oscar-winning actress will be featured on the cover of Vogue for the September issue, and during a candid interview, #JenniferLawrence talked about how the 2014 leak affected her. Although the initial leak was years ago, it's still something that haunts her today:
“It’s scary when you feel the whole world judges you. I think people saw [the hacking] for what it was, which was a sex crime, but that feeling, I haven’t been able to get rid of it. Having your privacy violated constantly isn’t a problem if you’re perfect. But if you’re human, it’s terrifying. When my publicist calls me, I’m like, ‘Oh, my God, what is it?’ Even when it’s nothing. I’m always waiting to get blindsided again.”
Jennifer Lawrence is arguably one of the most famous people alive, but just like any other person, she has the right to her privacy. Over the years the public has seen many celebrity sex tapes, nude photos, and sensitive materials leaked, to the point where it has become almost normal. On the contrary, the statements given by Lawrence are a reminder that these incidents have victims, and the emotional damage they can sustain is substantial.
It is worth mentioning that the man responsible for hacking and leaking JLaw’s personal photos (along with over 100 other celebrities) was apprehended and sentenced to 18 months in prison for invasion of privacy.
Jennifer Lawrence Addresses The Leaked Video Of Her Pole-Dancing
Unfortunately, the 2014 leaks weren’t an isolated incident for Lawrence. In May of this year, a video which showed JLaw pole-dancing at her friend’s birthday party was leaked. While this video was less intimate than the leaked nude pictures, it was still a violation of her privacy. Although Lawrence publicly addressed the video on her official Facebook page (in a glorious unapologetic fashion), she still had some thoughts on the incident, which she shared with Vogue:
“My biggest fear from that whole thing was that people were going to think that I was trying to be sexy. Also, it looked like I had taken my shirt off. I was in a crop top. I did not take off my shirt. I’m on the phone with my lawyers, and everybody’s like, ‘Is there anything we need to know before it comes out?’ And I’m like, ‘No, it’s all there.'”
Despite having her personal photos leaked, Lawrence hasn’t missed a beat in her career. She is still one of the top actresses working today, and to date her films have grossed over $5.5 billion worldwide. It’s unfortunate that JLaw had to endure the emotional turmoil caused by the leaks; however, her strength of spirit in the face of adversity is extremely admirable.
You can catch Jennifer Lawrence starring in Darren Aronofsky's upcoming psychological-thriller, Mother!, in theaters September 15, 2017.
