After being Loki's bitch for 87% of The Avengers (scientifically accurate, according to resident Moviepilot superhero specialist Matt), it was no surprise that slammed Hawkeye's involvement in the movie.
But, does this signal that Renner will be fired from sequel The Avengers: Age Of Ultron by ?
Last year, Renner told Total Film that:
For 90% of the movie, I'm not the character I signed on to play. It's kind of a vacancy. [He's] not even a bad guy, because there's not really a consciousness to him. To take away who that character is and just have him be this robot, essentially, and have him be this minion for evil that Loki uses... I was limited, you know what I mean? I was a terminator in a way. Fun stunts. But is there any sort of emotional content or thought process? No.
So he didn't get exactly what he wanted and threw a hissy fit. In what could have been a career spanning multiple movies while developing "the character he signed on to play", he instead gets in grouchy because he was featured as a plot device in his first non-cameo appearance as if it is a personal swipe at him. Not a wise decision. It's an ensemble film, not a Renner headliner. I don't think Marvel is at fault for how they treated Hawkeye in the movie. It's not like he's an integral part of the team. Still, now The Daily Superhero is reporting that Renner is done as Hawkeye because of his post-The Avengers bitching.
Even though nothing official has been said about Hawkeye's casting in The Avengers 2 - so take all of this reportage with a pinch of superhero salt - Whedon has said he will introduce a new brother/sister duo to the superhero ensemble team (Wanda and Pietro Maximoff?). Obviously there's no direct reason to think that Renner's arrow-slinging days are over, but the superhero chart is filling up thick and fast and it's getting harder to see where he might fit into the movie.
The source also suggests that there's a good chance Hawkeye will be recast - following Renner's stance on things - for The Avengers 2. And if really turns out to be the case, Whedon will probably utilize the actors from his upcoming ABC show, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. In other words, we likely won't be seeing any -sized mega stars filling in for Renner but maybe someone more open to supporting a television slot every week... Ideas?
On the flip side, if Renner is recast, then there's also probably a good chance that we could be seeing him incorporated into the new television show as a primary character. So, tell us, Avengers aficionados. Do you want Renner to be recast?
It's a long wait until this year's Comic-Con, where Whedon and can clear up all these nasty rumors that are currently in circulation. But until then, tell us what you think! Kill Hawkeye and add in Quicksilver? Kill Black Widow and add in Scarlet Witch? BOOM!
