Warning: This article contains spoilers from Gotham Season 3.
The third season of Gotham has been eventful so far and it looks like things are only going to get better. While exploring more of the #Batman mythology, this season has also seen the arrival of many of the Caped Crusader's biggest nemesis' including The Mad Hatter, the rebirth of Poison Ivy and the downfall of Captain Barnes who became The Executioner but Gotham has certainly left the best for last.
The entire Gotham fandom wept with Joy back in August when executive producer John Stephens confirmed the return of Cameron Monaghan and his sinister character Jerome Valeska. After months of speculation and little teasers from Monaghan on social media, the groundwork was set for his big return in last week's episode when it was revealed how exactly Jerome would be coming back to the show.
When Jerome first arrived on the show, the fans all began speculating whether or not the character would undergo a transformation and become comic book villain The Joker — Jerome shares many similarities with Joker, specifically the maniacal laugh and behavior. Jerome's death back in Season 2 pretty much put an end to that theory.
However, Jerome's imminent return to the show has resurrected that speculation about whether or not he will transform into the Joker and the images that Monaghan has posted on social media certainly seem to suggest that the character's new look is inspired by the New 52 Batman comics. This brand new image that Monaghan posted on Instagram certainly gives us the impression that Jerome has gone completely mad — just the way we like him.
He's definitely put a smile on our faces, that's for sure. Despite the maniacal expression and, you know, the scars, Jerome is still looking rather good. If you can manage to drag you eyes away from the above image there's even more madness below. it look's like we finally have our answer to that baffling question — these brand new images from next week's winter finale, courtesy of TV Insider, seem to suggest that Monaghan's crazed character will embrace his inner madness and transform into The Joker!
Jerome Finally Embraces His Inner Madness
Last week's episode revealed that Dwight Pollard, who works at the city morgue, has been part of an underground cult, worshipping the methods and the madness of Jerome. Together, the cult gathered and watched videos of Jerome while reciting his famous line — "you ain't seen nothin' yet." Before the credits rolled on the episode, it was made clear that Dwight was the one who would resurrect Jerome from the dead. Monaghan told TV Insider the following:
“I really can’t wait for people to see it...We have a few different looks [for him]…it looks really great. Our make-up special effects designer Mike Maddi did a phenomenal job.”
As you can see in these new photos, Jerome is dressed in full inmate garb, wearing a straight jacket and being accompanied by two henchmen. Likely two of his followers from the cult, the use of henchmen definitely give us the impression that Jerome is becoming the clown prince of crime — like we've seen in several comics as well as the iconic Batman: The Animated Series, The Joker has always used henchmen to do his dirty work and it appears that Jerome has adopted this stereotype.
The preview for tonight's episode shows Jerome getting into an altercation with his savior Dwight and I have a feeling that it won't end well. However, Jerome's plans for Gotham have yet to be revealed but knowing his methods, it's not going to bode well for the citizens of the city. Monaghan's evil character is back for two more episodes and these images from next week's finale certainly seem to suggest that Jerome is set to bestow madness on the city one more time.

Coming Full Circle And Going Out With A Bang
When we first met Jerome back in Season 1 he was the son of a performer in the Gotham circus. It was this fateful meeting with Jim Gordon that started a chain of events that spiraled out of control. Now that Jerome is back, it appears that he's going to come full circle in next week's winter finale — these photos reveal his sinister plan, he's going back to where it all began: the circus.
In a stunt that one could describe as incredibly Joker-esque, it appears that Jerome takes over as host of the circus but who knows what will happen when the attendees find out who is hosting the proceedings. It's reminiscent of a scene from Batman Forever, in which Two Face takes the citizens of Gotham hostage so perhaps Jerome has a similar despicable plan. As you can see from the photo above Jerome embraces his inner madness and he has finally become The Joker.
It'll be incredibly interesting to see if Jerome and Jim Gordon come face to face again as Gordon had a huge vendetta with the crazed criminal the last time he wreaked havoc on the city — Gordon will no doubt be pulling out all the stops to put an end to the mad man's reign of terror once again. Next week's episode of Gotham will mark the culmination of Jerome's three episode arc and will be the last episode before April, but who will have the last laugh?
Gotham's winter finale "The Gentle Art of Making Enemies" airs Monday, January 30 at 8/7c. What do you think of Jerome's new look? Tell me in the comment section below.
