Remember the best part about Iron Fist? That would be Asian-British actress Jessica Henwick, who has been evolving as a talent to watch as of late, also appearing in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Game of Thrones. Whatever you think about Iron Fist, everyone can agree that this Colleen Wing brings the energy that the series deserves. Furthermore, the actress also reprised her role in The Defenders. For an Asian actress in particular, the feat of being in all three of those franchises is pretty impressive, but where do you go from there?
I was able to catch up with Henwick during TerrifiCon at the Mohegan Sun, where I interviewed her about her future in Star Wars and the MCU, as well as her character's unfortunate conclusion on Game of Thrones.
The Force Is Strong In Her Career
How does it feel to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars and Game of Thrones, arguably the three most influential and iconic franchises of all time?
I am very lucky. It was not intentional at all but yeah, I'm really lucky how my hand was dealt.
Jessica Henwick has had quite the career so far. At only 25, the star has already been seen in three of the most prolific franchises in history. Her turn as the badass Colleen Wing in Iron Fist was the breakout in the #MCU series. She also has had a small recurring role in Game of Thrones, though she never got to cross paths with her Iron Fist co-star, Finn Jones as Loras Tyrell, in the series' entirety. And of course she's in Star Wars, who can forget #StarWars. Her role in Iron Fist specifically has been a win for strong female characters in the superhero genre, as well as those in the East Asian community. She was lucky with how The Hand (pun intended) was dealt.
In The Game Of Thrones, You Win Or You Die
Unfortunately, this season your character, Nymeria Sand, met her demise. How did you feel about it? How did the showrunners tell you?
[D.B. Weiss and David Benioff] gave me a phone call a couple of months before we started filming. I don't remember when exactly. It might have been only like two months. It was – I kind of knew it was coming because I had booked 'Iron Fist' and it was just so – the schedule was so non-stop that I knew I was not going to be able to go back for very much. And of course the show is winding down to an end. We already got one more season anyway so I knew that the end was nigh. I was hoping I would make it to Westeros but you know, I'm very grateful I had four wonderful years on that show. I had four wonderful years on that show and I have made some amazing friends that I will keep for the rest of my life.
Due to the fact that there was not much love for the Sand Snakes originally, it's too bad we as an audience did not get to see them grow as much as we may have liked. Finding a place in an already established series is hard enough, and though they did get a chance to shine in their final episode, there was too much going on in the saga at that point that their end was a given. At least less Nymeria means more Colleen right?
Is Jessika 'Testor' Pava In The Last Jedi?
Star Wars: Episode VIII, are you in it?
No, I'm not in Episode VIII. No. Hopefully [I'm] back for more in the future but as of now, if you want to catch up with Jessika Pava you have to read the comic books.
Unfortunately we will not be seeing Jessika Pava in #StarWarsTheLastJedi. That could signal that we may not be seeing Snap Wexley or any of the Blue Squadron, except Poe Dameron, in the upcoming film. One would expect that The Last Jedi's emphasis on the inner workings of the Resistance would bring these characters back to be further fleshed out, so it's too bad that we will most likely only see them in Marvel's Poe Dameron comics. We can always have our fingers crossed for Episode IX.
Misty And Colleen, Heroines For Hire?
The Defenders and Iron Fist. Personally, I binged The Defenders the morning it came out. Can fans expect a lot more interactions and team-ups between Misty and Colleen going forward?
You'll have to wait and see for 'Iron Fist' Season 2.
It seems Misty and Colleen will be crossing paths a whole lot in Season 2, and with a new showrunner, one can expect a deeper, more grounded and less convoluted take on the characters. Hopefully by adding a new variable like Misty (and her bionic arm), we can expect something different from Season 2. The second season of #IronFist as well as the second season of the #Defenders should construct an arc in which she stands side by side with the likes of Daredevil and Luke Cage. Now that would be awesome.
What franchise do you think that Henwick should tackle next?
