This article contains spoilers from The Walking Dead Season 7.
When Tom Payne's illustrious character Jesus first appeared on AMC's hit zombie series The Walking Dead, there was one question that all viewers had on their mind, and no, it wasn't how does he get his hair that straight in a zombie apocalypse. It was whether or not the #TV series would reflect the source material by making the character gay.
Since his first appearance in Season 6, Jesus has had a huge impact on Rick and the other Alexandrians and this season gave us yet another reason to fall in love with the long-haired warrior when he rescued Daryl from the villainous Negan. However, despite the fact that Payne's character has become a crucial part of the show, we've still learned absolutely nothing about his sexual orientation.
In the past, Payne has supported the idea of the character being gay on the show and in a recent interview with ComicBook.com, the actor revealed that the character's sexuality will be explored at some point, giving us yet another reason to praise Jesus. Confirming that Jesus is gay on the AMC series, Payne said:
"Yeah, [he] will be"
Payne may have answered our prayers and given us several reasons to give thanks, but he didn't elaborate further on the matter.
I can't tell you how that might be addressed in the show or how it would come across, but yeah. Essentially he is the same as he is the comic books in that regard."
How Will Jesus' Sexuality Be Revealed On 'The Walking Dead'?
Time and time again, Jesus has proven to be an extremely vital asset to Rick and the gang. Not only does he know a lot about the Saviors, he possesses impressive fighting skills and is extremely crafty too — we saw in #TheWalkingDeadSeason7 mid-season premiere that he stole a long range radio device from the Saviors' sanctuary, meaning that the group could listen in and be prepared for Negan's surprise visits. Is there anything Jesus can't do?
However, his boyish charm and handsome good looks, aside, we still don't know very much about the character. Unlike the other survivors, Jesus' backstory has never been revealed. In fact, I'd argue that we know more about Dwight than we do about Jesus. Payne's confirmation that Jesus is gay is the first thing we've learned about the character and, now that we know about his sexuality, it'll be interesting to see how this will be revealed on the show.
While there are potentially many ways that Jesus' sexuality could be explored, it's most likely that The Walking Dead will reveal his orientation through a conversation rather than more physical means. After all, Jesus became close to Maggie and Sasha during their stay at the Hilltop, so perhaps he will disclose this information to them. Either way, it's pretty awesome that this will be revealed on the show, because Jesus has become somewhat of a main character and, as a viewer, I definitely want to know a lot more about him.

Will Jesus Have A Love Interest?
As The Walking Dead characters spend the majority of episodes worrying about their very existence, relationships aren't particularly a key part of their storylines. However, we've seen with Rick and Michonne's blossoming romance that some people can move on and start fresh, even in this chaotic apocalyptic setting. If or when Negan is successfully defeated, then perhaps that will be the time for other characters to find some happiness too.
Unfortunately, the timing is probably not right for Jesus just yet. He's been pretty pre-occupied with saving everyone's lives, making a plan to take out the Saviors and keeping a watchful eye on Maggie. The last thing he probably wants to do is worry about menial relationships.
All of this pressure to lead the group to victory is possibly why we've learned so little about Jesus, but from what we have seen, he's a pretty awesome guy. Unfortunately for fans shipping him with Daryl, Greg Nicotero recently rejected the rumors of their romantic involvement and broke our hearts in the process.
Saying that, The Walking Dead has already featured a few #LGBT characters over the years, including Tara, Denise, Aaron and Eric, so there's no reason why we couldn't meet another one along the way. Or perhaps The Walking Dead will go all Grey's Anatomy and Jesus will end up spelling trouble for Aaron and Eric's perfect relationship? Who knows what will happen? Either way, we're excited to find out!

Despite his short time on The Walking Dead, Jesus has already proven to be a badass on a number of occasions and the fact that he's gay is just another reason for us to love him. Whether or not he will have a love interest remains to be seen, but we're definitely excited to see how his sexuality will be revealed on the show. Either way, it's awesome to see the series sticking so closely to the source material, especially where Jesus is concerned. Hallelujah.
