Recently, veteran comedian and actor Jim Carrey made headlines at a New York Fashion Week event. A red carpet interviewer had expected Carrey to make some quick, witty jokes, but instead he shared his existential opinions on life, the universe and everything. Watch it below:

After leaving everyone confused, Carrey has revealed what was going on in his head ... by giving an equally existential explanation for his bizarre thoughts.

After the Fashion Week fiasco, The AV Club caught up with and gave him the chance to expound on his statements that left fans scratching their heads. Carrey gave an equally thought-provoking explanation:

“As an actor you play characters, and if you go deep enough into those characters, you realize your own character is pretty thin to begin with. You suddenly have this separation and go, ‘Who’s Jim Carrey? Oh, he doesn’t exist actually.’ There’s just a relative manifestation of consciousness appearing, and someone gave him a name, a religion, a nationality, and he clustered those together into something that’s supposed to be a personality, and it doesn’t actually exist. None of that stuff, if you drill down, is real.”

Over the course of his long and colorful career, Carrey has played many distinct characters, whether he was starring in comedies or dramas. But if his latest interview is anything to go by, his skills as an actor may have gotten to him — he seems to be experiencing some kind of identity crisis and cannot find the "real Jim Carrey."

The actor has been going through some troubles that would have anyone questioning themselves. In 2015, Carrey's ex-girlfriend Cathriona White committed suicide, and the actor is now facing a lawsuit that claims that he contributed to White's death by providing her with the prescription drugs she used in her final moments. Whether or not the personal tragedies he's facing played a part in his current state of mind, Carrey certainly sounds like a different person compared to the funnyman most people know him to be.
