Avengers: Infinity War will unite all the heroes we've met in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. But while we know the likes of Captain America (or...Nomad?), Iron Man and Thor will be assembling to kick Thanos back to whatever weird space cave he crawled out of, one hero that's been hard to pinpoint has been Captain Marvel.
After two years worth of speculation as to whether or not #BrieLarson's Carol Danvers would join the Avengers, #KevinFeige weighed in on the matter back in 2016. Unfortunately, he offered one of his signature cryptic answers, which left an even bigger question marks over our heads.
But then something happened. During #SDCC2017, we learned Captain Marvel will be set in the '90s, meaning the good ol' Captain has already existed in the #MCU for a few decades. That tidbit reignited fans' expectations, as they realized it would be much easier for the Kree-powered heroine to pop up in Infinity War. Sadly, now we know that won't be the case (for sure).
One of the directors of the film, #JoeRusso, sat down for an interview with ComicBook.com, and he was asked about the possibility of Carol Danvers joining the fight for the Infinity Gauntlet. His answer?
"She's not in 'Avengers 3.'"
Well, that's it. Captain Marvel isn't in Infinity War, there's nothing more to it... or is there?
Captain Marvel Is Likely Joining 'Avengers 4'—And Possibly Bringing Some Enemies With Her
Last year, the Russo Brothers gave a presentation of Captain America: Civil War in Washington, DC. While answering fan questions, Anthony Russo discussed the challenge of working on #InfinityWar and Avengers 4 consecutively, because they had to balance out quite a lot of characters, one of which, he accidentally blurted, was Carol Marvel.
Seeing how we now know #CarolDanvers isn't in the third Avengers movie, that statement leaves only one option open: Avengers 4. The piece of news may be disappointing to some, but it's actually a great choice. Firstly because we'll see Danvers as part of a larger ensemble after getting to know her in her own movie, and secondly, because she could give Earth's Mightiest Heroes (and their affiliates) a brand-new threat to focus on.
You see, Infinity War and #Avengers4 may be filming back-to-back, but as the Russo Brothers revealed in an interview with Uproxx, the movies will have different plots:
"The movies are two very different movies."
Judging from that quote, the Avengers will probably dispose of #Thanos in Infinity War and leave Avengers 4 free to explore a new threat. Keep in mind, I'm just speculating, but that's where Danvers could come in. Her solo film will open the door for the Skrulls, a species we know aren't one-and-done players.
They have the potential to be threats for numerous future installments, so what if #CaptainMarvel provides the Avengers' fourth outing with its new plot line? It's a definite possibility.
So far, Marvel hasn't introduced a character without a purpose. Each new individual stepping into the franchise is a piece in the larger, overarching puzzle, as was the case with newcomers like Ant-Man, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange. Captain Marvel is one of #Marvel's most powerful characters, so it's very likely she'll not only get to shine in Avengers 4, but also give the franchise a new and exciting direction to follow. Hopefully we'll get to see that happening.
Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018, while Captain Marvel arrives on March 8, 2019.
