The dawn of the DCEU might have seemed dark at first, when bad reviews tore at [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870). But after an executive producer shake-up, Warner Brothers seem only too eager to prove that their DC movies have a bright, and totally franchise-able future.
Suicide Squad is next up, and lately the marketing has really amped up the fun, selling the movie as the irreverent, atypical, color-saturated antidote to Batman v Superman's unrelenting gloominess.
So far the response to the Suicide Squad trailers has been positive, and Warner Brothers are so confident of its success that they've already greenlit a solo movie for Harley Quinn. Developed and produced by Margot Robbie herself, the Harley Quinn film will showcase DC's fantastic female characters, both heroic and villainous, and we already have high hopes for the spinoff. But Warner Brothers aren't stopping there... or so the latest rumors suggest.
Multiple Spinoffs Planned
Suicide Squad is intriguing on the most part because of its cast of colorful characters. From villains to anti-heroes, these misfits and oddballs are tasked with saving the world — if they don't screw up first.
This is an interesting and fun concept, and the trailers have been sure to focus on each character's comedy potential, from Harley's madcap antics to Captain Boomerang casually cracking open a can of beer in the midst of a battle. According to the latest rumors, its the characters that Warner Brothers has confidence in, and any of them could get their own solo film.
"The Joker is a definite possibility for a spinoff, and Jared [Leto] seems up for it from what I’ve been told. They’re also really hot on Jai Courtney’s character Boomerang right now. Nothing’s set in stone yet, but you’re definitely going to be seeing a lot more of these guys in the years to come."
This report comes to us via WeGotThisCovered, who claim their sources at Warner Brothers HQ have heard some chatter about Suicide Squad sequels and spinoffs.
The two characters mentioned so far are Joker and Captain Boomerang. Both of these characters make sense as they're interesting and have the potential to chime with fans, but they also might be better placed in other movies. The Joker is rumored to appear in Ben Affleck's Batman film, and as an old foe of Barry Allen, Captain Boomerang might work in the solo Flash movie.
So, as for the veracity of the rumor, it seems reasonable for Warner Brothers to franchise the fuck out of Suicide Squad, with multiple spinoffs focusing on different characters. But we'll probably have to wait a bit longer to find out exactly who those characters are. In the meantime, at least we can get good and hyped for that Harley Quinn solo movie!
