Just recently, Tom Cruise shocked the world by revealing that his iconic fighter pilot, Maverick, would take to the skies once again in Top Gun 2. Usually, films like this take a while to come together, but (as is only fitting for a Top Gun sequel), things are moving forward faster than we thought. Hot off the heels of the announcement, the film might have already found its director.
Variety is reporting that Paramount Pictures has narrowed down its list of directorial candidates to one person: #JosephKosinski, director of Tron: Legacy and Oblivion. The latter film had #TomCruise as a protagonist, and as Cruise expressed multiple times, they enjoyed a great working relationship.
According to the report, Kosinski had a great concept for Top Gun 2, which ultimately made Paramount select him as the top choice for the job.
Tom Cruise met potential directors while filming the upcoming #MissionImpossible6 to make sure Top Gun 2 was ready to go once he finished his next adventure as Ethan Hunt, Variety reports. That fits with what he said during his announcement, regarding his intention to start filming the sequel next year. Now, you may be wondering...
Is Joseph Kasinski A Good Choice For 'Top Gun 2'?
Can Kasinski reintroduce Val Kilmer's Iceman and Tom Cruise's Maverick to audiences, even though he only has two director credits under his belt?
Tron: Legacy and Oblivion were not only sci-fi adventures with flashy action and special effects, but they had characters and a story that viewers could connect with. A little-known fact is that Kosinski helmed two award-winning video game trailers: Halo 3's "Starry Night" and Gears of War's "Mad World." Both of those, just like the aforementioned films, had a great balance between character development and action.
That's ultimately what made #TopGun so special. Yes, it was an exciting blockbuster about two muscly fighter pilots, but we had reasons to connect with the characters. As Jerry Bruckheimer revealed to the Hollywood Reporter a few years ago, the sequel's story is supposed to carry on that development for our protagonists:
“The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones? Cruise is going to show them that they’re not obsolete. They’re here to stay. It’s just getting to the starting place.”
Going by what Kasinski has done with his projects, he would be more than capable of handling that type of storyline with his own twist. Plus, the fact that his idea for the sequel was what won Paramount over may tell us a lot about what to expect.
Keep in mind, Kasisnki's hiring is not a done deal, so we'll have to wait to see what happens. He would be a great choice for the job, so hopefully we get to see his vision for the film. #TopGun2 doesn't have a release date, but with the reports of production starting next year, it's likely the film will fly into theaters sometime in 2019.
How do you feel about Joseph Kosinski possibly directing Top Gun 2? Do you have any other directors in mind? Let me know in the comments!
