The LA residence in which Motes' body was found contained a stash of prescription drugs, but the dwelling was not the 37-year-old's home. Captain John Kades, spokesman for the coroner's office, did not want to rule out the role that drugs may have played in Motes' untimely death. He has publically stated that accidental drug overdose or suicidal overdose are the most likely causes of death.

An autopsy to determine the cause of Motes' death was planned for Monday but toxicology reports could take as long as eight to ten weeks to be completed.

Motes is the half-sister of and . She and both Eric and Julia share the same mother, but Motes has a different father to the more famous pair.

The family tragedy clearly put a dampener on Julia Roberts' recent Oscar nomination for a best supporting actress in August: Osage County. The star chose not to attend the Oscar nominees luncheon on Monday and the Roberts family released the following statement to people magazine;

It is with deep sadness that the family of Nancy Motes ... confirms that she was found dead in Los Angeles yesterday of an apparent drug overdose. There is no official report from the Coroner's office yet. The family is both shocked and devastated

Julia and Nancy appear to have been close in the '90s but there have been suggestions that they grew apart in the last decade. Motes cites growing up with such a 'very pretty and very popular' sister as a source of huge self-esteem problems.

Whereas often siblings do not see eye to eye, it is interesting to think of the destructive pressures of growing up in someone else's formidable shadow. Julia's meteoric success must have had an effect on Motes, but everyone in this story are innocent parties. I hope Julia is not burdened with feelings of guilt around her own accomplishments after all she has achieved this year.

It's all just very sad.
