Warner Bros. has been doing a remarkable job keeping Superman's role in Justice League a secret. Aside from a few images of the Big Blue Boy Scout alongside his teammates, the precise nature of the superhero's role in Justice League has been a head-scratching enigma. One of the biggest questions fans have had about the character is whether we'll see his black outfit make its cinematic debut.
In the comics –– following his death at the hands of Doomsday –– Clark was brought back to life with a snazzy new black costume. The #DCEU had a very similar setup in Batman v Superman and there have even been a few clues dropped over the past year indicating that Clark Kent will indeed don a new costume. While the matter began as a rumor, things seem to be turning around thanks to the latest and best clue about the black suit's appearance recently popping up on Reddit.
That's A Might Fine Suit You Have There, Superman
A Reddit user by the name of BeenTryin released a picture of an advertisement for #JusticeLeague action figures. The first half of the sheet isn't all that interesting, as we can see almost all Justice League members, Steppenwolf and a parademon. The second half features a huge surprise though: A black-suited #Superman action figure.
Now, we have to keep in mind that merchandise for blockbusters isn't always a reliable source of information. There are designs that are exclusive for a movie's merchandise that don't necessarily play a part in the film itself. Case in point, prior to #BatmanVSuperman being released, fans were sent into a frenzy when a special action figure pack featuring Batman, Superman and an armored Lex Luthor appeared in stores.
If you take a closer look, you'll notice that all figures announced in the promotional sheet are actually in the film. It features helmeted Cyborg, shirtless Aquaman, an Atlantean soldier and Batman in his Apokolips-proof armor. None of the figures are deviations from what we've seen in trailers and pictures, which makes it quite likely that Superman will appear in his black suit.
That's not all, though. SuperHero Stuff put out a listing for new official Justice League merchandise. One of the highlights was a hat from 39Thirty based on Superman's black armor:
Merchandise for superhero films often varies greatly from what actually appears in the movie, but the hat's description teases that this one is in fact based on Superman's brand new black armor, which he uses shortly after being brought back to life:
"Based on Superman’s newly-resurrected appearance in the hit film, 'Justice League.' Our Superman Black Armor Justice League 39Thirty Fitted Hat is based on Superman's costume post-death: A black variation of the Superman suit adorned during his time in the regeneration matrix, a Kryptonian chamber that reversed the previously lethal effects of his protracted punch-em-up with Doomsday.
In the film 'Justice League,' it seems Superman’s cinematic resurrection will parallel the hit comic story, considering he returns in a stylish black costume soon after a very tense fight with Doomsday."
Keep in mind, it's currently unclear whether this is an official description from the retailer. However, the information promises an explosive return from #KalEl to the DC Universe, and it validates our theories that Superman would be brought back to life sporting his black costume.
This Isn't The First Time Superman's Black Suit Has Been Teased
As if there wasn't enough of an indicator Superman would be switching up his suit, we actually have another major clue. Last year, Henry Cavill took to Instagram to share a peek of a mysterious black suit. The picture was captioned with "#Superman" and, if anything, the pattern was a dead giveaway for the fact that it was the famed black suit.
Almost a year after that tease, a new picture surfaced showing Cavill in a black Superman outfit. Now, the image itself was a bit suspicious since a source was never identified, so it could have been some simple fan art to get us diehard fans hyped up even further. But, you have to wonder whether that was in fact a leaked production still; I certainly hope so.
On top of those two teases, we know that it's possible to bring the suit back because we caught a glimpse of it during Man of Steel. If you recall, when Zod is interrogating Clark about the Kryptonian Codex, the environment they're in changes from a peaceful farm to a disaster zone full of human skeletons. When that transition occurs, we see Superman sporting a version of the black suit.
Taking all of that into account, Superman donning his black suit looks like a pretty safe bet. But we'll know for sure when Justice League hits theaters on November 17, 2017.
What do you think about the Superman's black suit? Will we actually see him wear it in Justice League? Let us know in the comments!
