Rogue One introduced quite a few new characters to Star Wars lore. But the character that everyone seemed to love most was K-2SO, played by #AlanTudyk. The sassy droid was such a stand-out thanks to Tudyk's comedic timing that he quickly became even more of a fan favorite than BB-8 in The Force Awakens.
Often compared to HK-47 from Knights of the Old Republic, K-2SO is a reprogrammed Imperial security droid who follows the orders of Captain Cassian Andor. This droid brought some much-needed humor to an otherwise serious war film in the #StarWars universe. When the film needed a laugh or two, K-2SO delivered. As one of the heroes of the Rebellion, let's take a look at the droid's 10 best lines.
#10. “I’m standing by as you requested although there’s a problem on the horizon: There’s no horizon.”
After Director Orson Krennic orders the Death Star's weapon to fire onto the capital city of Jedha, K-2SO acts fast and prepares the U-Wing to pick up the crew. As the ship is taking off, K-2SO quips this line of dialogue informing Cassian that he can no longer see the Sun due to the massive destructive cloud that’s headed their way. It’s a little humor in a desperate moment that makes this line stand out.
#9. “You’re right, I should just wait in the ship.”
When K-2SO was asked to stay behind with the ship, audiences knew that this wouldn’t last. This deadpan line of dialogue is spoken after a #Stormtrooper tosses K-2SO a hand grenade that’s about to go off, until he casually tosses it over his shoulder at oncoming Stormtroopers.
#8. “Did you know that wasn’t me?”
This hilarious quote was directed at #JynErso after her encounter with a couple of Stormtroopers on Jedha. Jyn shoots her blaster at the group, taking out an Imperial security droid right in the chest. Fortunately, the security droid wasn’t K-2SO and he was unharmed - but for a moment, he had his suspicions that Jyn neither knew or cared that the lookalike droid wasn't him.
#7. “Not me. I can survive in space.”
The beauty of this line was its perfectly bad timing, said just as the #RogueOne crew is about to land on Scarif and discussing what would happen if their ship were to be blasted to bits by Imperial forces. While it may have been true, this line couldn’t have come at a worse time with all of the other crew members scared to death at the suicide mission immediately facing them. Talk about oblivious arrogance.
#6. “Congratulations, you are being rescued. Please do not resist.”
This is the first line of dialogue spoken by K-2SO and it immediately establishes his deadpan sense of humor and somewhat oblivious nature. This moment takes place when the Rebels are rescuing Jyn Erso from what looks to be an original Clone Turbo Tank - except with Jyn trying to fight her way past the Rebel scouts and them subsequently kicking her ass then K-2SO slamming her to the ground, it feels less like a rescue and more like a kidnapping.
#5. “I’ve got a bad feeling about…”
You knew this line was going to be somewhere in the film and it didn’t surprise me at all that Kay is the one who says it. It also doesn’t come as a shock that this line isn’t even finished as Cassian and Jyn cut him off so he doesn’t blow their cover. It's a fun, self-referential wink and acknowledgement that the line has become an overused cliche.
#4. “I find that answer vague and unconvincing.”
This is said after Jyn tells Cassian that she had just found an extra blaster lying about, but #K2SO, who doesn't like or trust Jyn at this point, isn't buying it. He's already agitated that he himself isn’t allowed to wield a blaster and his crankiness comes through here to comedic effect.
#3. “You’re letting her keep it?! Would you like to know the probability of her using it against you? It’s high. It’s very high.”
Once again showing his lack of tact or subtlety, K-2SO informs Cassian — loudly, right in front of Jyn — that it isn’t a smart idea to allow her to carry a blaster. Kay believes that the odds are high that she could easily turn against them to try and escape and he doesn't care if she knows it.
#2. “Your behavior, Jyn Erso, is continually unexpected.”
Unlike the rest of his deadpan snark, this line stands out because it's heartfelt and shows that his formerly hostile feelings toward Jyn have changed. It’s a touching moment because Jyn, knowing Kay has been asking for a blaster, gives him one to use as protection, stating, “You wanted one, right?” Her unexpected gesture catches him off-guard and is the moment that the suspicious droid truly starts to warm to her, realizing there may be more to her than he originally thought.
So what could possibly be better than all of these quotes? Read on to find out!
#1. “I’ll be there for you, Jyn...Cassian said I had to.”
K-2SO is nothing if not consistent with terrible timing. Right when you thought K-2SO has had a change of heart and wants to fight for Jyn, he amends it with, “Cassian said I had to.” Though Kay goes on this mission, audiences know it’s not out of the goodness of his heart, but because he has an inherently good heart, the line is hilarious.
