Pokémon has been a staple of pop culture for a long time thanks to its various TV shows, video games and card games. The franchise is setting its sights on conquering the big screen with a live-action Detective Pikachu.
Back in 2016, it was revealed that Rob Letterman (Goosebumps, Monsters vs. Aliens) had signed on to direct the film, with Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch writing the script. Legendary and The Pokémon Co. have been eager to get the project off the ground, and it's come together quite quickly as a result. In early November, #JusticeSmith (The Get Down, Paper Towns) signed on to star in the movie.
Now, the live-action Pokémon adventure has found its leading actress.
Kathryn Newton May Join The Pokémon Universe
THR and Variety are reporting that #KathrynNewton has entered negotiations to star in Detective Pokémon. The actress confirmed this on Instagram, sharing a picture of herself disguised as Pikachu with the caption "YEP."
Newton will be playing Lucy, a journalist who finds herself embroiled in an adventure alongside Justice Smith's character and Pikachu. In the source material, Lucy has a trusty sidekick in the form of a Psyduck. It wasn't clear whether the little guy will make his way into the film, but I'm crossing my fingers for him to be there. I mean, can you imagine how hilarious seeing the creature interacting with Detective Pikachu would be?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Newton beat out some strong competition for the part, including Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why), Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things, Hanna Montana: The Movie) and Haley Lu Richardson (Split).
In case you want to get familiar with her work, Newton starred in Paranormal Activity 4 and had roles in HBO's #BigLittleLies and Lady Bird. Right now, she's preparing to play a central role in Supernatural's upcoming spinoff Wayward Sisters. Overall, she's a fantastic actress that brings a lot of charisma to her work, so I'm excited to see her play off of #Pikachu.
What Do We Know About 'Detective Pikachu' So Far?
Plot details are being kept under wraps right now, but the film will be reportedly based on the 2013 Great Detective Pikachu: The Birth of a New Duo 3DS game. The story revolves around a Pikachu that, while not as powerful or agile as other members of his species, is incredibly smart. Using his intelligence to his advantage, he goes by the name Detective Pikachu and solves crimes.
One fateful day, the little guy comes across a boy named Tim Goodman, and the two come together to work out various Pokémon-related mysteries. Yes, the game is as irreverent as it sounds, so hopefully the film will capture that feel. Now, in the game, Pikachu speaks in a rather gruff tone so the film will need an actor can capture his peculiar voice.
No one has been confirmed for the part so far, but according to a report from The Hashtag Show, Legendary and The Pokémon Co. are eyeing stars like Hugh Jackman, Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Mark Whalberg. I don't know about you, but I'd love to hear The Rock in the role. Who knows? His daughter is a huge Pikachu fan, so it could totally happen.
Detective Pikachu doesn't have a release date yet, but with its two leading actors already in place, we should probably expect an official announcement soon.
