In what is undoubtedly the best TV news you'll hear all day, Katie Cassidy is returning to Arrow as a series regular for Season 6. But this time, there's a difference. While the actress initially played Laurel Lance/Black Canary on the show's first four seasons, Cassidy will return to the show as Black Siren Laurel's evil Earth-2 doppelgänger. She will appear in the final two episodes of Season 5, before returning to the show as a full-time regular in Season 6.

Cassidy is a mainstay of the , having been a series regular on Arrow during Seasons 1 through 4. After her character's untimely death, she returned in flashbacks, dream sequences and will also appear on the season finale of Legends Of Tomorrow.

However, her most memorable return was as Black Siren — who made her debut on , before coming to Star City and fooling Team Arrow into thinking she was the real Laurel. Executive producer Marc Guggenheim commented on Cassidy's upcoming return, stating:

"One of the things that most excites us about ‘Arrow’ is that we go where the story takes us. Last year, the story took us to the tragic death of Laurel Lance. This year, our midseason finale reintroduced us to Laurel’s doppelgänger, Black Siren. We were so taken by Katie’s fearless interpretation of this character that we knew her story was not yet finished. We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Katie back to ‘Arrow’ as Black Siren, though as her appearances on ‘Arrow’ and ‘DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’ this season show, she never really left the family."

Back Where She Belongs

Fans of Katie Cassidy were distraught when the Black Canary was controversially killed off in Season 4 by Damien Darhk. Due to this, losing Cassidy proved to be a major blow to Arrow, as comic book fans turned against the show and the ratings saw a sharp decline that only got worse during the fifth season.

However, her return to the show marks the beginning of an exciting new era, and just might win Arrow a large portion of its fanbase back. Moreover, it can be considered a victory for the fans who created petitions, launched campaigns and voted endlessly on internet polls to show their love for Laurel.

While Earth-1 Laurel may not be coming back from the dead anytime soon, fans can rest assured that Katie Cassidy has come home, and I can't wait to see how she reinvigorates Arrow.

Redemption For The Siren

While Cassidy's full-time return to Arrow is undoubtedly great news, it's very interesting that the creative team chose to have her return as Black Siren instead of resurrecting Black Canary. After all, Earth-2 Laurel's last appearance on Arrow saw her working for Prometheus and coming very close killing Team Arrow. Thus, we have to wonder: how will she feature into the end of Season 5 and Season 6?

Oliver and the gang have done their best to honor Laurel's memory this season by recruiting a new Black Canary — Dinah Drake. While we initially speculated Black Siren would fill that role, she once again chose the dark path, despite Oliver's pleas. But hope was not lost, as he promised to keep her close in case she could find redemption.

Thus, it's likely that Season 6 of Arrow will see Black Siren becoming the new Black Canary — although she may not need to adopt the identity if she already has her own. This is a wise move, because after her traumatic past was revealed on the show, a redemption arc would most definitely be an intriguing storyline.

After all, Laurel herself didn't have it easy — losing her sister multiple times and suffering with alcoholism — but she channeled that grief into becoming the Black Canary. Having Black Siren find the same kind of redemption would be a worthy way to honor Laurel's memory. And I couldn't think of a better person to fill Katie Cassidy's previous role on the show than Cassidy herself.

However, it's worth noting that if Black Siren does indeed follow a redemption arc, we are left with a few questions — most importantly, what happens to Dinah Drake? Would the team really have two Canaries? Or will one of them turn rogue while the other one is called upon to defeat them? And then, of course, there is the possibility that Black Siren might be next season's big bad. That would be an equally as intriguing option.

Almost a year after her character's death on Arrow, Katie Cassidy will return to the show as a series regular for Season 6. Her return marks the end of her absence and the beginning of an exciting new era as we get to see whether or not Black Siren will redeem herself or become the big bad we all know she's capable of becoming.

Either way, things are finally looking up. And as a fan of both Laurel and Black Siren, I can't wait to see Katie Cassidy return to where she rightfully belongs. Get your earmuffs ready, because this Siren will most certainly scream again.
