Back in 2006, when the world was first introduced to Twitter, having a million followers seemed like a distant dream for anyone. Three years later, Ashton Kutcher became the first Twitter user to pass the lofty million-follower milestone. In 2011, Lady Gaga became the first person to boast 10 million followers. Now, a new milestone has been passed: 100 million followers.

On Friday, became the first person to reach 100 million followers on Twitter. The official Twitter account first broke the news by congratulating the singer on accomplishing such an incredible feat.

Katy Perry joined Twitter in February 2009, and it took her just over eight years to reach this milestone. Perry was quick to thank Twitter for giving her "a voice" and providing a medium of reaching out to her millions of followers:

These Five Celebrities Are Next In Line To Reach 100 Million Followers On Twitter

There are a few celebrities who are close to the 100 million mark, and could still overtake Katy Perry in the long run:

1. Justin Bieber: Justin Bieber joined Twitter just a month after Katy Perry joined. With close to 97 million followers, Bieber is next in line to pass the 100 million mark. The story might have been different if Bieber's first tweet came a month before Katy Perry's.

2. Barack Obama: He may no longer be the president of the United States, but Obama's popularity isn't going away anytime soon. Barack Obama currently has 91 million followers on Twitter, and could well be the third person to cross the 100 million line.

3. Taylor Swift: Katy Perry and Taylor Swift's three-year feud divided pop fans all over the world — but when it comes to Twitter followers, there's a clear victor (sorry, Taylor). Taylor currently has a little over 85 million followers and has some way to go before she gets to the 100 million mark. We wonder what Swift must be feeling about Katy Perry's latest accomplishment.

4. Rihanna: Rihanna brings the count to four singers and one former POTUS. She has 74 million followers on Twitter right now. It might not be easy for her to surpass Katy Perry, but 100 million followers is not too far away.

5. Ellen DeGeneres: Ellen recently lost the crown for "most retweeted tweet" to a guy who just wanted to have some nuggets. Although it won't be easy for her to reclaim that title again, Ellen might look for Twitter glory elsewhere. She crossed 70 million followers today, and is just 30 million followers away from reaching the 100 million mark.

We would like to congratulate Katy Perry and hope that she continues to break records on Twitter. At the rate that she's going, even 200 million seems possible!

Who do you think will reach 200 million followers on Twitter first? Katy Perry, Justin Bieber or someone else?
