Now, it may have been eight whole years since 's now-iconic hit the big screen for the first time in ' , but the passing of time has hardly dulled our collective enthusiasm for ol' shellhead, or for movies that feature Downey Jr. playing him. As such, there's long been a whole lot of fan interest in a potential fourth installment in the Iron Man series, with 2013's now seeming a pretty distant memory. Whether we'll actually see an , however — or, at least, one still starring Downey Jr. — has long remained a mystery, with the actor's major role in pretty much every other movie series seeming to have taken the 's first franchise off the table a little. It's reassuring, then, that...

Kevin Feige Hints That Iron Man 4 Could Still Feature Robert Downey Jr.

That, at least, is the most obvious takeaway from Marvel Studios head honcho Feige's recent comments about the possibility of recasting some major Marvel roles in the future. As he told the Toronto Sun when asked whether Marvel would reboot the character with a new actor, or have Stark pass the torch to a younger in-universe character:

"I think it could be either one... These characters have been around for 50-plus years, and have been relatively ageless. Sometimes there are alternate stories where the character is younger than they usually are, or older, but they usually maintain a certain age. I think most of these characters that are iconic, like (James) Bond, like Batman, like Spider-Man, like Iron Man, someday will be portrayed by different actors."

While that may, on the surface, seem to be bad news for fans of Downey Jr.'s take on Iron Man, it seems there may be more to Marvel's plans than meets the eye.

Feige, y'see, also made sure to add that:

"The good news right now is I don’t have to think about that for a long time... We have story-lines for this cast for many years to come."

Which would seem to suggest that not only does Marvel have extensive plans for Downey Jr.'s Stark, but that the actor himself is on board to continue playing the character for the foreseeable future. That, in turn, makes a Robert Downey Jr.-starring Iron Man 4 all the more likely. After all, with Iron Man 3 having made over $1.2 billion at the global box office, a sequel has always seemed something of an inevitability — and if Downey Jr. is sticking around in the MCU for awhile, it seems all but certain that Marvel will throw whatever vast amount of money he requests his way in order to get him to star in it.

Still want more about a potential Iron Man 4, though? Never fear, we've got you covered right here.

In the meantime, what do you think? Will we see Downey Jr. reprise his role as Tony Stark in Iron Man 4? Let us know below!
