The ubiquitous social media darlings that are the Kardashian-Wests are about to expand their family. Only this time, we'll not be gifted with a barrage of snaps of Kimmy K in various states of gestation.

According to People magazine, and are having another baby — via a surrogate. The couple, who already have children North and Saint, have hired a woman to carry their third child to term.

The reality star previously discussed plans to use a surrogate during an April episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, in which she talked of the possibility with her sister Kourtney:

"I'm definitely leaning more towards I want to try. After talking to Kanye, I think I always knew that surrogacy was an option, but I didn't think it was that realistic of an option, and now I feel like that's my reality. I feel like surrogacy really is the only other option for me.""

This approach also has health benefits for the reality star, who has a condition called placenta accreta, in which the placenta attaches itself to the wall of the uterus and has trouble detaching during labor.

Bleeding during the third trimester, premature birth and organ damage during the removal of the placenta are common with placenta accreta. A previous caesarian birth is often the cause of this condition.

Doctors had warned during her last pregnancy that their are risks for Kardashian if she were to carry another baby to term. As the star explained in her blog:

"My placenta stayed attached inside my uterus, which is a condition called placenta accreta. This is a high-risk condition that happens when the placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall.

My doctor had to stick his entire arm in me and detach the placenta with his hand, scraping it away from my uterus with his fingernails.

My delivery was fairly easy, but then going through that—it was the most painful experience of my life! They gave me a second epidural but we were racing against time, so I just had to deal."

TMZ reports that according to the agreement between the Kardashian-Wests and the surrogate, during the pregnancy the woman must follow a healthy lifestyle. She isn't allowed to drink alcohol, smoke, take drugs, or engage in sexual intercourse for three weeks after embryo implantation.

The unidentified surrogate is also restricted from using hot tubs and saunas, handling cat litter, eating raw fish, applying hair dye, or drinking more than one caffeinated beverage per day.

It's worth noting that while the woman is referred to by various media outlets as a surrogate, there is a difference between this and a gestational carrier, who carries the implanted and fertilized embryo of the mother-to-be. Meantime, a surrogate traditionally donates her own egg to the pregnancy and is therefore biologically related to the unborn child.
