Just a few weeks ago, unleashed its kick-Asgardian trailer for Thor: Ragnarok. The record-breaking trailer featured a comedic scene in which Thor meets up with his "co-worker" Hulk in the middle of a battle arena.

But the Hulk is not the only character that Thor will be reunited with during his visit on Sakaar. Director Taika Waititi has made it clear that he will be playing Korg, a gaint rock-like creature, in the upcoming movie.

A Korg-like creature was first introduced in Thor: The Dark World, but quickly dispatched the rock monster with one solid punch. Last year, Waititi posted an Instagram image of piano keys and a pedal on top with the word "KORG."

On Monday, Waititi explained to various entertainment reporters at a Marvel showcase that he initially had no intention of playing Korg, and wanted someone with the appropriate muscle and size like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson for the part. But Waititi said he couldn't get the Rock to suit up as the rocky beast because "there wasn’t enough chicken and salmon in New Zealand" to appease his appetite.

Instead, Waititi decided he would part of Thor's new friend himself. Since Korg is a creature that towers over the mighty Thor, Waititi explained that he had to hold up a 2D rendering of Korg's head, so the actors had the correct line of sight.

Who Is Korg?

In the Planet Hulk series from Marvel Comics, Korg is a member of the alien race called the Kronan. They are a race of creatures made of solid rock. Just think of the Rock-Biter character from The Neverending Story, but on steriods. He was exiled and forced to fight in the same arena as the Hulk on planet Sakaar.

In Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi wanted to take the character of a typical hulking rock monster and flip it on its head: “He’s huge and heavy, but with a light soul. We wanted to make him funny and a relatable entry point into this world. And Thor needs friends.”

Korg becomes one of Thor's friends and companions, and explains to Thor how the planet and gladiator arena work. It appears that Waititi will continue to infuse his sense of humor into this film and make Korg the plucky comic relief to liven a story that is sure to have some dark tones and intense scenes. Waititi is very familiar with adding humor to his roles within his own movies.

Not The First Time He's Suited Up

Waititi is no stranger when it comes to playing characters in his movies. Back in 2011, he played Hal Jordan's friend Tom Kalmaku in the movie Green Lantern. It's one of the main scenes when Hal Jordan reveals his power to summon his Green Lantern suit.

One of his first movies, you can catch him playing the part of Gordon in Eagle vs. Shark alongside Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords. You can even see him bring some levity to a funeral scene in Hunt for The Wilderpeople starring Sam Neill.

Of course, we'll have to wait until Thor: Ragnarok opens on November 3, 2017 to see what it has in store for Korg.
