After an unsuccessful attempt to introduce the Sinister Six following The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony is giving its ambitious project another shot — piece by piece. The movies being developed for this new universe, which may overlap with the MCU, are Venom (starring Tom Hardy and directed by Ruben Fleischer) and Silver & Black with Black Cat and Silver Sable, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.

Now it appears Sony is adding two films to that list, featuring Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio.

It's Time For More Spidey Villains

The Hollywood Reporter put out an article exploring the deal between Marvel and Sony, and the site dropped a bombshell: aside from Venom and Silver & Black, is developing projects involving Kraven and Mysterio that will eventually lead to something bigger.

"Other projects will focus on Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio. The idea, says a studio source, is to build out a world gradually rather than launch one immediately, as they had been trying with Spider-Man villain ensemble 'Sinister Six,' which has been shelved."

Everyone's jaw's off the floor? Great. Before diving into the specifics of what this means for the Spidey franchise, it's important to learn:

Who Are These New Baddies?

Mysterio

Quentin Beck, a.k.a. has a very unusual relationship with Spider-Man. He first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #13 in 1964. Using his background in special effects, Beck created a Spider-Man suit and carried out various criminal activities.

As it goes with Spidey and his luck, the police and the public confused him for Mysterio. While the web-slinger stopped the villain, Mysterio became one of his most powerful enemies over the years. While Mysterio doesn't have any supernatural powers per se, he's a skilled at special effects, optical illusions, he dabbles in robotics and to top all of it off, he's an expert hand-to-hand combatant from his years as a stuntman. Those skills allow him to go toe-to-toe with our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

As for what's in Mysterio's snazzy suit, he has a variety of gases that allow him to inhibit 's super senses, a hallucinogen to make people buy into his theatricality, a corrosive substance to eat away Spider-Man's webbing, lasers and even an electrified cape. In short, this guy is harcore.

Sergei Kravinoff first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #15 in 1964. Kraven moved from Russia to the United States at a very young age, and he became a hunter — the best in the world, to be precise. Kraven's self-confidence was tested when Spider-Man appeared, hwoever. Kraven went after him, feeling that he would only be worthy of being a hunter if he managed to take down the web-slinger.

Spidey overpowered him, and their encounter served as the catalyst for decades of intense rivalry, one that reached its boiling point in 1987's Kraven's Last Hunt. Kraven has a twisted sense of honor: He's willing to kill his prey, but he refuses to do it with anything other than his bare hands.

As for his abilities, aside from being in top shape, Kraven drinks a potion made from herbs that grants superhuman strength, agility, stamina, speed and reflexes. His potential integration into the MCU is particularly interesting because Tom Holland himself expressed his desire to have him as an antagonist in the future.

What Exactly Are These Projects?

There are two likely options at play here. First, Sony could be working on solo projects for the two villains. Or perhaps they are developing a bad guy team-up movie, similar to what the studio's doing with .

It's hard to know for sure what Sony has in store for the characters, but considering that the studio has barely touched on the solo-villain territory with and Silver & Black, I'm more inclined –– and hopeful –– to think that Mysterio and Kraven are being developed as a team-up, especially with how the report states they're building blocks for something much bigger down the line. (After all, a buddy-cop-style movie starring two comic book villains could be storytelling gold.)

Hopefully we'll get more details on this in the near future. While we wait, be sure to check out once it hits theaters on July 7, 2017.
