Note: This article contains potential spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Aside from the staff-using, Force-sensitive badass #TheForceAwakens gave us as a new protagonist in Rey, we also got an incredibly interesting villain in Kylo Ren a.k.a. Ben Solo. The son of Leia Skywalker and Han Solo, he fell into the hands of Supreme Leader Snoke, who turned him to the dark side.
Usually, Star Wars villains are confident about themselves and don't hesitate when getting their job done, but Kylo Ren is different. He isn't sure of who he is or which path he wants to take. That was an intriguing storyline left open-ended in the last film, which we'll get to see develop further in this year's #TheLastJedi.
Proving just how desperate we are for juicy Star Wars information, we look for clues anywhere they're available. And those sources often boil down to promotional material and toys. One of those toys has given us our first look at an intriguing new piece of Kylo Ren's story.
Kylo Ren Is Getting An Intimidating New Ship
Last month, a report came out stating #KyloRen would get a brand new personal ship. This week, Making Star Wars noticed an online store, Mikado, had listings for Hot Wheels' new line of The Last Jedi vehicles. Among them is Kylo Ren's personal Starfighter. The listing gives us our first look at the new flying weapon:
Usually, vehicles aren't very exciting aspects in a world as vast and diverse as Star Wars, but if a new tidbit of information we got about it is accurate, Kylo's Starfighter has a very interesting backstory, one that could tease the villain's psychological state following the death of his father at his own hands and defeat at the hands of Rey.
When their news of the vehicle came out last month, Making Star Wars gave an in-depth description of it. Reportedly, Supreme Leader Snoke is disappointed in Kylo Ren after he failed to take down Rey. Desperate to win back his master's approval, Kylo has a custom-made ship powerful enough to give a good fight to the Resistance (presumably on his own):
"Supreme Leader Snoke was let down by Kylo Ren when he failed to stop the 'girl.' Now he is trying to prove himself. He doesn’t wear his helmet as much as he did in the first film from what I’ve been told. His new TIE has pointed wings like the TIE Interceptor but with a pill-shaped body. The cockpit is sort of like an old B-29 bomber compared to the classic TIE cockpit window. The thrusters in the back remind me of the Falcon as they glow blue and sort of evoke the Falcon. The custom ship was supposedly made to his specifications so he could take down the Resistance and I believe we see Kylo fly from the Mega Destroyer in his new ship."
What stands out from that description is the Starfighter's similarity to the Millennium Falcon. Kylo Ren is conflicted. One side of him fights to stay in the light, while the other tries to prove himself to be a worthy dark apprentice. If the ship does share that design similarity to the Millennium Falcon, it could offer a subtle psychological exploration of the character's duality in the next few #StarWars films.
Of course, keep in mind this is just a description and aside from the image above, its details should be taken with a grain of salt. But overall, these little teases get me more and more excited to watch the film.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
