It's been a very long year and a half since The Force Awakens, and fans have been desperate to see a trailer for the next #StarWars movie ever since. Today at Star Wars Celebration, our patience was finally rewarded. Rian Johnson and the cast gave fans our first glimpse at the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi in all its glory.
The brand new The Last Jedi teaser trailer wasn't afraid to show the world that this Star Wars movie is going to be different from anything we have seen in the galaxy so far — and at the same time, it l one of the best Star Wars movies to date. Let's take a look at the biggest and most epic moments from the new teaser trailer.
Kylo Ren's Helmet Is Left In Shambles
At the end of #TheForceAwakens, the First Order was left in a very fragile state. Kylo Ren was brutally injured on Starkiller Base after an epic lightsaber duel with Rey and Finn. We still do not know how Kylo Ren was rescued, but the events of The Force Awakens left the main antagonist of the new trilogy injured.
The shot of Kylo's helmet in pieces symbolizes the temporary destruction of the First Order. However, just like in The Empire Strikes Back, we will see Kylo Ren and the First Order get back on their feet and continue to reign terror over the galaxy. This shot is very intriguing, as not only does it symbolize certain events but it could lead to Kylo Ren getting a new helmet and possibly a whole new costume!
Taking A Dive Into Jedi History
This teaser trailer has practically confirmed the popular theory that Luke Skywalker went hiding on Ahch-To because there are remains of an abandoned Jedi temple left on the planet. In the trailer, we see Rey rubbing her hand across the dusty book with a very familiar logo pasted on the cover: the symbol of the Jedi Order.
Looking at this one shot alone brings chills up my spine, as it is an indication that Luke will teach Rey the history of the Jedi and the Sith by using the resources scattered across the Jedi temple. This trailer definitely gives us a Dagobah feel, and I am very intrigued to see what methods Luke will use to train Rey. Speaking of which...
Rey's Jedi Training
The teaser trailer has given us two very beautiful shots of Rey wielding a lightsaber. The first shot shows Rey showing off her lightsaber skills to Luke from a distance on a cliff on Ahch-To. It would be a crime not to mention that the cinematography is top-notch throughout the entire teaser trailer, especially at the specific moments where Rey is training.
The second shot shows Rey running in her new Jedi threads with her blue lightsaber whipped out ready for action. There is a good chance that this moment isn't extracted from a training scene between Rey and Luke; I believe that Kylo Ren and the First Order will find the location of Luke Skywalker on Ahch-To and they will arrive on the planet with the goal of executing the last Jedi.
Phasma In The Flames
One of the most intriguing shots from the entire trailer featured a burning building with a dome on the top. We see that Captain Phasma and her army of stormtroopers have gone through and completely destroyed this unknown building. However, I am pretty confident that this is a Jedi Temple.
In the shot, we see R2-D2 sitting aside a Jedi who has fallen to his knees (clearly Luke Skywalker), watching the building burn to the ground. This may be a flashback to when the First Order destroyed Luke's attempt to bring the Jedi Order back to life. After this, we know that Luke will vanish into isolation, but if that's what we're seeing, it is very cool to find out that The Last Jedi will introduce flashbacks for the first time in a Star Wars movie.
It's A War...In The Stars
The trailers showed a variation of B-Wings with red smoke trailing from the ends. If you look closely on the horizon, you can see about a dozen AT-AT walkers marching across the winter floor. In general, this looks like it will be very similar to the Battle of Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back.
We also see an injured Finn inside a pod, which at first doesn't make any sense considering we saw him safe and sound inside the Resistance base at the end of The Force Awakens. However, maybe the Resistance had to flee from their base after a major attack by the First Order and this is how they are transporting an injured Finn.
As you can see, there are a lot of parallels between this battle and The Empire Strikes Back. This was something a lot of fans including myself were worried Lucasfilm would do in The Last Jedi, since The Force Awakens followed A New Hope's structure, but there are a lot of unique moments to make up for this.
Plus, we get a couple seconds of an epic space battle, and even get to see the Millennium Falcon back in action, presumably piloted by Chewbacca and/or Rey:
'It's Time For The Jedi To End'
The very last shot of the trailer shows an old and fragile Luke Skywalker standing at the entrance to a cave, telling Rey, "It's time for the Jedi to end." Luke has been hiding out on Ahch-To for quite some time now, studying the way of the Jedi Order and perhaps realizing its flaws. After trying to bring the Jedi back to life and significantly failing to do so, Luke feels a heavy amount of guilt on his shoulders. Is he ready to move past the Jedi and train Rey to be something else?
We will have to wait until the film is released to see, but it appears The Last Jedi is a big step into fresh and original territory.
