Justice League is a couple of days away from release and as the moment all DC fans have been waiting for comes closer, we're starting to get more and more information about what lies in the film. Just yesterday some vital information about Green Lantern came to light (courtesy of yours truly) and now we know more about what lies ahead in the #DCEU post-Justice League. While one of the two leaked scenes is standard superhero fare — the Flash and Superman speed away in a race that has been long debated by fans — the other scene is much more important.
The Post-Credit Scene Reveal
The second post-credit scene was apparently conceived of by Snyder, as a while back the director actually released a storyboard of the scene on Twitter, and it features both Slade Wilson and Lex Luthor.
The storyboard and the leaked scene reveal how the two villains meet after Wilson frees Lex Luthor from Arkham and puts an imposter in his place. Deathstroke and Luthor then congregate aboard a ship, where Luthor (now looking more like his comic book version) greets Deathstroke, and informs him of his plan to make a "league" of his own. Intriguing.
It's important to note that actor Joe Manganiello is fitted with his character Slade Wilson's eyepatch, with white hair and a beard completing his transformation into the fearsome villain we all love from the comic books. Another thing worth noting: Luthor's words about forming a "league" could tease a potential Justice League sequel.
"We have to level the playing field. To put it plainly, shouldn't we have a league?"
This implies that Luthor is looking to team up with other villains, countering the Justice League. And we've already seen such an evil league in the comics.
The Injustice In Justice League 2
Avid DC fans will know that this post-credits scene is most likely a hint to the formation of the Injustice League. In the comics, the Injustice League is a supervillain group formed by Lex Luthor to take down the #JusticeLeague. The Injustice League comprises of villains like Luthor, Deathstroke, Joker, Black Manta, Haley Quinn, Catwoman, Poison Ivy among others. Since most of these characters are already part of the DCEU world and others might be introduced soon — Black Manta is rumored to be the villain in Aquaman, and Gotham City Sirens should introduce Catwoman and Poison Ivy — the Injustice League could be the perfect threat for the #superheroes to battle with.
Despite multiple superhero team-up films in recent memory, we haven't yet seen a gang of heroes go up against a non-CGI threat: The Avengers, Age of Ultron, Suicide Squad and even the upcoming Infinity War all culminate in a heavily CGI-enhanced finale. Pitting the Justice League against some of DC's baddest villains would be a smart move for the sequel, especially as early reviews have reacted unfavorably to Justice League's main villain: The CGI-created Steppenwolf.
Having League face a gang of real-life villains in the sequel would allow the actors' performances to shine through, rather than being masked in CGI, making for better chemistry between heroes and villains. Since the actors playing the antagonists would be Jared Leto, Margot Robbie and Jesse Eisenberg, this potential Injustice League would make for one hell of a film.
Justice League 2 Or The Batman?
Of course there is the chance that the Injustice League could be used as the primary villains for Matt Reeves' The Batman — as Deathstroke was slated to be the main antagonist for this film, it could be that the Justice League post-credits sequence is setting up #Batman's solo movie instead of a sequel to the team-up flick. However, since the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director has promised a crime-noir and more mystery-oriented take on the Caped Crusader, the Injustice Society's involvement doesn't quite fit the bill.
There is also the possibility that Luthor's odd choice of words was simply that, and we are reading between the lines, but again this seems improbable. Post-credits scenes are, after all, designed to tease and set up future movies, and DC is no stranger to this concept. Besides, Ezra Miller stated to the Toronto Sun that he'd love for the Injustice League to show up in the sequel — and he said this right after advising audiences to watch the credits. In retrospect, it seems very much like he was teasing fans.
"The Injustice League. I think I can speak for everyone in the League when I say that we’re extremely excited by the prospect of continuing this journey. We don’t really know for sure, and we’re usually the last people to find out, but … each of the heroes in this movie has specific nemeses, and I think seeing some incarnation of the Injustice League (which includes Lex Luthor, Joker, Deathstroke and more) would be something that DC fans would be pretty stoked about."
So there you have it, folks! It looks like we may be getting the Injustice League as the primary villains in Justice League 2 and if so, it'll certainly be amazing seeing the Joker and the Batman throw down, or seeing Harley Quinn stand against Wonder Wonder Woman. If this truly is what DC are planning to do, Justice League 2 may be one of the most interesting superhero films in a long time.
What do you think? Is the Injustice League coming to Justice League 2?
