Justice League may have been a fairly self-contained story, but it opened the door for an exciting new era in DC's cinematic franchise. During the film's post-credits scene, a newly-freed Lex Luthor met with Deathstroke to offer him a spot in a new villain team he was forming in light of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman joining forces.
The sequence made something pretty clear: the Legion of Doom was coming. Fans went wild speculating on how this nefarious club would come into play moving forward, but given the constantly shifting state of the #DCEU, guessing what would happen next has been a bit of a headache.
Now, however, if a new rumor is to be believed, we may have an idea of what Warner Bros. plans to do with the baddie-themed team.
The Legion Of Doom Is Reportedly Going To Be A Big Part Of The DCEU Moving Forward
El Fanboy recently put out a report touching on the new route #WarnerBros. is taking with the DCEU. The site alleged that WB is planning to make the Legion of Doom an integral part of its superhero franchise, and build them up with little teases in different movies, similar to what Marvel did with Thanos. While the studio will reportedly hold off on any major news for the time being, they plan to make an announcement during San Diego Comic-Con 2018:
"They're working on something cool for [San Diego Comic Con 2018], related to [Legion of Doom]. They want to continue planting seeds and building momentum for the team."
Now, there are only three DC movies coming our way in the next two years (Aquaman, Wonder Woman 2 and Shazam!), so you're probably wondering when the seeds to this nefarious super team will come. Well, according to El Fanboy, the teasing will continue in James Wan's #Aquaman:
"Things will be generally quiet on the DC front until 'Aquaman' hype begins, but I can tell you that there will be another L.O.D. tag at end of that."
Keep in mind this is just a rumor, so we should take this information with a grain of salt. With that said, using Aquaman's post-credits scene as another launching pad for the Legion of Doom sounds quite reasonable. We know #ArthurCurry will be going up against Ocean Master in the film, but he won't be the only comic book villain to give the King of the Seven Seas a headache.
Black Manta –– played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen III –– will also make his presence felt. Given that the man has been one of the Legion of Doom's traditional members for a long time, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up as another piece of the puzzle for #LexLuthor's villainous team.
Building A Villain Team Is The Right Way To Go For The DCEU
Let's have some fun for a second and assume this information is accurate. Among its many issues, the DCEU has always struggled with giving its mythology a proper buildup. Major concepts and storylines that would benefit from longer setups –– such as the New Gods and the Death of Superman –– are rushed to the big screen in an effort to make the universe grow as quickly as possible. As we've seen numerous times, this approach hasn't worked, at all.
Warner Bros.' rumored Legion of Doom strategy would change that for the better. A slew of villains could be fleshed out and established over a long period of time to get audiences ready for their eventual union. That would give the DCEU a clear direction, and if the Thanos buildup in the MCU is any indication, it could raise moviegoers' interest in the saga.
Overall, if handled well, I have no doubt that the Legion of Doom could breathe fresh air into WB's superhero universe.
Now, all we have to do is wait for any official announcements and see how films like Aquaman, Wonder Woman 2 and Shazam! pan out to have a clearer idea of the path Warner Bros. is taking.
Which villains would you like to see join the Legion of Doom? Let me know in the comments!
