It's no secret that Disney has been reviving a number of our beloved animated classics into live-action features in recent years. Beauty And The Beast, starring Emma Watson, was only released a few months ago and grossed $1.2 billion worldwide - showing Disney that fans can't get enough of these adaptations. With that level of success, it's not surprising that the studio will continue to turn their classic tales into live action adventures.
News regarding #Disney's live action The Little Mermaid remake has been scarce, but the #D23 Expo has delivered some exciting news about the film. Alan Menken, the legendary Disney composer of the original 1989 animated classic has officially announced that he will collaborate with Lin-Manuel Miranda on the new music for the live-action film!
Lin-Manuel Miranda: A New Disney Favorite?
Lin-Manuel Miranda is no stranger to Disney. With his work on Moana, Miranda's 'How Far I'll Go' was nominated for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song), so it's no surprise that he's in good standing with the studio.
However, Miranda's involvement with Disney doesn't stop here. He will also star in Mary Poppins Returns alongside Emily Blunt, which is slated for a 2018 release. Additionally, he will be voicing Gizmoduck in the DuckTales reboot and has previously written music for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Despite his extensive résumé with Disney, The Little Mermaid is a special project for Miranda, who is a self-professed super-fan who even named his 2-year-old son Sebastian after the animation's lovable crab.
Miranda first joined the project back in November, but we had no idea what his involvement would entail until the D23 Expo announcement. Back in November, Miranda talked with Vulture about his uncertain position, expressing how enthusiastic he was to be involved with the project despite not knowing what exactly he was expected to do:
“If this requires new music, I’m here for that, and if this requires me weighing in on who makes this thing, I’m here for that. If this requires me just saying, ‘That doesn’t look like it’s underwater,’ I’m even here for that! It’s going to be a huge challenge to not make it feel uncanny valley–ish”.
Well, now we know the full story, giving fans a cause for celebration. Considering his award-winning career, we can certainly expect some fantastic music for the underwater adventure.
