If you've never seen any of the #FastAndFurious movies, you may be in the minority of moviegoers — and if your friends invite you to The Fate of the Furious, you're probably worried that you'll have no idea what's going on. Relax, because the guy who plays the best character in the franchise has you covered.
Ludacris portrays the super smart and truly unique character of Tej Parker, who's been with Dom's crew since 2 Fast 2 Furious in 2003. He met with Vanity Fair and dropped all of the knowledge you need to enjoy the eighth installment to the absolute max:
Ludacris starts his Fast & Furious recap with the movie that started it all: 2001's The Fast and The Furious. That's when the four main characters were first introduced: Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker), Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster) and Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez).
Brian, an undercover cop, infiltrates an illegal street racing event and meets Dom, the most badass, unstoppable human being he has ever encountered. After falling in love with Dom's sister, Mia, Brian then becomes fond of Dom — and when a truck heist of DVDs goes south, instead of arresting Dom, Brian lets him go.
Ludacris goes on to recap the second film, 2 Fast 2 Furious, his character's first appearance as mentioned before. Set in Miami, it is here that Tyrese Gibson's hilarious character Roman is also introduced.
As expected, Ludacris explains in fine detail the most important aspects of each movie, like the introduction of Han (Sung Kang) in Tokyo Drift and its placement in the timeline (Tokyo Drift is set after the events of Fast 6). And he even breaks down when Letty supposedly died in Fast 4 and came back to life in Fast 5's post-credits scene.
With #FastFive the franchise was completely rejuvenated, becoming more than just a street racing movie. Here the crew from Los Angeles and Miami unite as one and gather the aid of Luke Hobbs (The Rock) to take down one of Brazil's toughest crime lords. They become a pack of car-racing mercenaries in Fast 6, recruited by Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russel), a top secret black ops government official, to take down the international criminal Owen Shaw (Luke Evans). The successful defeat of Owen Shaw brought his brother Deckard (Jason Statham) into the game in Furious 7. It is here that the beloved character of Brian O'Connor retires, due to the tragic death of actor Paul Walker.
The Fast and the Furious has come a long way from its DVD-stealing plots; now it's about stopping cyber terrorists and CIA most-wanted criminals. Now that you are up to date with the Fast franchise, thanks to Ludacris, you are ready to experience one of this years most anticipated movies, in theaters now.
