The Last Jedi may not be as big of an enigma as its predecessor, The Force Awakens, in the leadup to its premiere — but there are still plenty of questions left to answer. One of the biggest is: What's going on with Luke Skywalker?
There is tons of speculation regarding Luke's motivations and allegiance. And now we may have a juicy new clue about the journey our favorite Jedi Master will be going through.
A Suspiciously Dark Look For Luke
Mozimánia, a Hungarian film magazine, recently released a new photograph of #MarkHamill as #LukeSkywalker. At first glance, there doesn't seem to be much to the image, but there's something peculiar about it that eagle-eyed fans picked up:
Luke is sporting all-black robes, with a red hue toward his right side. That's made #StarWars fans go bananas, because they believe the specific choice of colors and lighting adds to the speculation that Luke's moral compass may not be as in tune as it was during the original trilogy. Essentially, people believe this is a hint for his turn to the dark side.
Now, seeing this as a clue may understandably sound like a stretch to some, but it's a valid possibility to ponder.
Could Luke Be Turning To The Dark Side In 'The Last Jedi'?
So far, none of the things we've heard about Luke's journey from The Last Jedi point to him being a baddie. Yes, he's a grumpy guy living on his own after a family tragedy, but he's definitely not as ruthless as someone like, say, Supreme Leader Snoke. However, that doesn't mean that he doesn't have some leniency toward the dark side. You see, there have been a few pieces of symbolism in The Last Jedi's promotional material that could suggest our hero is riding the fine line between light and dark side.
More recently, Making Star Wars claimed to have seen a few concept posters for the film, and they released an artist's interpretation of them. The first one showed Luke next to #Rey, with #KyloRen at the top.
The second concept poster was much more intriguing, because it was a one-sheet dedicated entirely to the film's baddies. To our surprise, Luke is featured in it, wearing an ominous dark hood:
So, what does this mean? Well, the constant hints at Luke's duality in the promotional material could validate a theory that's been making the rounds online as of late: Luke is a Grey Jedi. To give you some background, the Grey Jedi are #Force users who ride the fine line between the light and dark sides of the Force, without entirely committing to one or the other, or giving in to murderous impulses attributed to full-fledged dark side users.
That would be an interesting development for the character, and it would add a compelling moral ambiguity to the concept of not only Luke, but for the Jedi in general. If that's indeed what's happening, #Lucasfilm and #Disney have been doing a great job with hinting at it in the promotional material.
We'll get to know what's going on in with Luke when The Last Jedi flies into theaters on December 15, 2018.
