AMC has announced that the final season of Mad Men will be split into two, with the first seven episodes airing spring 2014 and the final seven airing the following year in spring 2015.

Here's what series creator Matthew Weiner had to say:

We plan to take advantage of this chance to have a more elaborate story told in two parts, which can resonate a little bit longer in the minds of our audience. The writers, cast and other artists welcome this unique manner of ending this unique experience.

AMC has used this technique of splitting a season before with both The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad and the results have been spectacular. The Walking Dead is the highest rated show on cable television, while Breaking Bad's viewing figures have gone through the roof during its final season.

The only downside is for us fans, who have to wait an extra 12 months to see what finally happens to Don. Oh well, I suppose I could drink lots of scotch in the meantime. Cheers!
