20th Century Fox all adapt the fantasy card game Magic: The Gathering to the big screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the studio plans to build a big, costly franchise on the trading card game which features wizards, magical creatures and those sorts of things. The article names Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings as orientation points for the sure-to-be CGI heavy affair.

To which I say: you wish!

Never having been much of a fantasy fan myself I’ve no idea if Magic: The Gathering has enough potential (or magic if you like) to become the source material for a successful fantasy franchise.

The upcoming World of Warcraft adaptation should provide a bit of a hint of how large the audience for fantasy game adaptations are, although both are of course two very different sorts of games.

What do you think?
