If you've read the The Shadowhunter Chronicles novel series or watched the live-action adaptations, then you'll be familiar with the High Warlock of Brooklyn, Magnus Bane. This mystical Downworlder with a flair for guyliner started off as a minor character but quickly become one of the most beloved in the #Shadowhunters universe.
As Magnus's power over us grew, so did his story. In 2014, The Bane Chronicles was released, consisting of 11 novellas detailing his life, adventures and many romances. With #Glee alumnus Harry Shum Jr. playing the part on cable channel Freeform's Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments series, Magnus has truly risen in the ranks of fan favorite. After last year's Season 1 finale kiss between Magnus and a certain Shadowhunter (we finally got Malec!), we are dying for Season 2. In anticipation of the season premier next month, here are seven reasons #MagnusBane is the greatest character in Shadowhunters.

1. He Has Hundreds Of Years Of Backstory
The story of Magnus Bane began in 16th century Indonesia ,where he was born to a Dutch-Indonesian woman and the prince of Hell, Asmodeus. Magnus was a seemingly normal child until his abilities began to manifest. His parents grew fearful of their son, so Magnus ended up being raised by the Silent Brothers of Madrid.
Over the centuries, Magnus traveled the world, crossing paths with Shadowhunters and Downworlders alike. While fans will no doubt remember how Magnus helped Clary's mother, Jocelyn, erase Clary's memories of the Shadow World, few are aware that he also used glamor to help Queen Marie Antoinette escape the French Revolution. This well-dressed man of magic has enough stories to captivate dinner parties for years to come. Hopefully, more of his past will be revealed in Shadowhunters Season 2.
2. He Lives His Truth
Magnus has always been cut from a different cloth, and he owns his differences. Having lived such a long life, he has a sense of self-acceptance unlike any of his younger counterparts. He is open about his sexually fluid nature and dalliances. As he once told the timid and closeted Alec Lightwood:
"Alexander, I've been alive for hundreds of years. I've been with men, been with women — with faeries and warlocks and vampires, and even a djinn or two."
Magnus is a man who knows what he wants and is not afraid to go for it. This is most clearly illustrated by his pursuit of Alec soon after first meeting him. Who would have guessed that someone as old as Magnus Bane would be the most revolutionary and progressive character in the Shadowhunter series?
3. He's A Mystical Badass
How many times would Clary and her crew have been lost without Magnus's abilities? In short: many times. With his magical powers, Magnus is capable of casting spells and performing summoning rituals, making him a huge asset to the team. Much like his sartorial style, Magnus's magic tends to manifest itself in bright colors — usually blue flames and sparks at his fingertips. It was Magnus's magic that saved a fatally wounded Alec, and he was the only one capable of administering the spell that woke up Jocelyn. As Alec told Lydia Branwell in "Bad Blood":
"Magnus is, um — quite magical. He's, uh, very, very good at magic."
4. His Fashion Sense And Panache Is Unsurpassed
Though the case could be made that Isabelle Lightwood has the most solid grasp of fashion, she still can't compete with the High Warlock of Brooklyn. Magnus wears an array of cosmetics including glitter around his eyes, lipstick and nail polish. Though he is often considered strange due to his appearance, Magnus flaunts his beauty in glitzy and resplendent outfits for every occasion. From his perfectly coiffured hair down to his footwear, Magnus has a style all his own that stands out against a backdrop of black-leather-clad Shadowhunters.
5. His Sarcasm Never Disappoints
No one does sarcasm quite like Magnus Bane. With spot-on delivery in almost every situation, he brings all the sardonic wit. While the rest of the characters are up to their steles in drama, Magnus is there to lighten the mood and keep everyone grounded with nonchalant one-liners. Considering that most of the characters are teenagers, it makes sense that Magnus would be the one furthest removed from hysterics. With centuries of wisdom and experience, he is not easily shaken. His unwavering calm gives him the perfect platform to get some laughs in.
6. He Is The Reason Behind Malec
There is no denying that the budding relationship between Magnus and Alec — or #Malec, if you will — captivated fans and showed us a new and interesting side to Magnus. Malec's journey during Season 1 moved at a natural pace, and often left us salivating for more. Without Magnus's drive to make things happen for himself, Malec probably would not exist.
When first we met Alec, he was under intense pressure to uphold his family's traditions while struggling with his feelings toward his best friend Jace. It was only when Magnus and Alec met that Alec started down a path of self-realization. While Alec struggled to admit his sexuality (even to himself), Magnus was at peace with his. Magnus helped Alec come to terms with his sexual urges and his obligation to make himself happy. Through this process Malec was born and fans rejoiced!
7. He Is Straight Up Hot
Not to be superficial, but Magnus is pretty easy on the eyes. Harry Shum Jr. was well cast for the role and looks great as he brings Magnus to life. Given that Magnus is well passed his bicentennial, you have to admit he is aging well — or at least he was; Magnus stopped aging when he was 19. Beyond being in great shape and sporting phenomenal hair, Magnus has two other notable features: his yellow-green, feline-like eyes with vertical pupils and a very Kyle XY-like absence of a belly button.
