has been in development for a long time, and after what seemed like an eternity, it's finally moving forward. Last month, the film got the release date of April 13, 2018, less than a year from now. That meant one thing: the development wheels needed to start turning soon. And so they have.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Fox has cast two of the main heroes: Wolfsbane and Magik. And the casting choices, while not exactly a surprise, are a welcome addition to the X-Men franchise.

Maisie Williams Is Rahne Sinclair a.k.a. Wolfsbane

I don't think Maisie Williams needs an introduction! She is known for playing Arya Stark, a sweet little girl turned ruthless assassin on HBO's hit series Game of Thrones.

The description of her New Mutants character, according to THR, reads:

"[A] girl struggling to reconcile her religious beliefs with her power to turn into a wolf."

Wolfsbane is heavily tied to another main player in the X-Men movie universe: Moira MacTaggert. In fact, the scientist delivered her and became a surrogate mother for her after Wolfsbane's powers first manifested and the residents of the town she lived in tried to kill her. That has me wondering whether Rose Byrne's version of Moira could play a part in the character's backstory, or whether it will be altered.

Powers: Superhuman strength, reflexes and reflexes. Enhanced stamina, speed and size.

Anna Taylor-Joy Is Illyana Rasputin a.k.a. Magik

The description for Magik reads:

"[A] girl who has learned sorcery and uses teleportation discs to travel. She is also the sister of Colossus, an X-Man who appeared in 'Deadpool'."

Could that mean an appearance from the CGI Deadpool version of Colossus in New Mutants? At this point, anything is possible — we'll have to wait and see.

Anna Taylor-Joy has had starring roles in films like The Witch and, most recently in M. Night Shyamalan's Split, opposite James McAvoy. It's been rumored that McAvoy will play a major role as the wise professor in New Mutants. If that's the case, it will the ultimate crossover to see both actors together on screen again.

Powers: Mystical armor, psionic shields, well-versed in sorcery, ability to teleport through her Stepping Discs and total control over her own alternate dimension, called Limno.

The Internet Was Expecting This Casting

There's something very curious at play here. Last year, it was heavily rumored that Williams and Taylor-Joy had joined the cast of the film as these characters, now officially confirmed. At the time, though, Fox denied the rumors, so it's curious to see just how secretive the studio is being with this one.

These are only two members of the team though — one that's expected to be comprised of other heroes like Danielle Moonstar, Sunspot and Cannonball — so more major casting announcements are sure to be our way.

According to the report, New Mutants is expected to begin filming in July. Both Williams and Taylor Joy are incredible actresses, so I can't wait to see what they bring to the X-Men universe!

New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars) and hits theaters on April 13, 2018.
