, who will portray Superman's enemy in 's upcoming Man of Steel, has offered a different take on the infamously villainous character.
In a recent interview with VH1, Shannon revealed that:
He's not a villain. He's not a villain any more than any other General fighting to protect his people. He doesn't like to just hurt people and steal diamonds - he's focused on being successful at his job.
Shannon also said that he will not be following 's portrayal of Zod from Richard Donner's Superman:
I think the way Terence Stamp approached it - and this isn't any kind of criticism of his performance - there was something kind of detached about it. Pure, hatred, rage, whatever... I think this is more ambiguous.
Shannon stole Revolutionary Road, should've won an Oscar for Take Shelter, and now he is in one of the biggest movies of this year. Excited doesn't even cut it.
Man of Steel will arrive in theaters on June 14th.
