Fans of Bridget Jones were horrified to learn recently that probably won't be delivering Bridget Jones's Baby, after all. The star - who played Mark Darcy in both Bridget Jones' Diary and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason - has been killed off by author for the third novel, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.
In a recent interview with Time, Fielding revealed that her reason for giving the good-looking protagtonist and his hideously ugly Christmas sweaters the chop was because she required "pain and confusion" for Bridget, the now 51-year-old mother of two, in order to hit the right comedic notes. She also divulged details about how Firth coped with the loss:
I did want to tell Colin in person but we were trying to have lunch, and I couldn't really tell him why I was trying to meet him and he was in a different place... So I ended up telling him he died on the phone... I had to ask him if he had someone with him and if he was sitting down. It was like someone actually had died. We had to process it. And I was almost saying, I'm so sorry for your loss.
Helen Fielding - what the heck do you think you're doing, killing all that is right and good with the world?!?
What do you guys think about Fielding's decision, and - more importantly - how is Bridget going to cope?
