John Goodman has been on a roll in recent years, delivering scene-stealing supporting turns in Inside Llewyn Davis, Flight and Argo.

Now, the actor, who has shockingly never been nominated for an Oscar (what the hell, right?), has joined Mark Wahlberg in The Gambler in a sure-to-be-colorful role.

The crime drama is a remake of James Toback's eponymous semi-classic which starred James Caan as a literature professor with a gambling addiction which lands him in hot water. In the remake Wahlberg will play Caan’s role, while Goodman stars as a Jewish loan shark whom the protagonist owns money.

, aka the man who breathed new life into the Planet of the Apes franchise with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, will direct.

The Gambler should show its hand sometime in 2015.
