So, is this actually happening? In an interview with fashion magazine Net-A-Porter at the end of June, Pitch Perfect actress Anna Kendrick was discussing working with Ryan Reynolds when she was asked if she'd ever consider playing a superhero. And the first name that came to her mind was Squirrel Girl, an actual Marvel hero:
"My brother sent me a Squirrel Girl comic because he thinks I should [play her]. I don't know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!"
Her comment was enough to send comic book fans into a critter-filled frenzy, with Twitter user Bosslogic — who's specializing in making casting rumors come to life in his designs — putting together a portrait of a squirrel-loving Kendrick.
Even the Russo brothers joked about including Squirrel Girl in their massive Infinity War lineup:
"It would be perfect casting, and we're huge Anna Kendrick fans."
Marvel Is Reportedly Developing A 'New Warriors' TV Series
But while this was all humorous speculation, in the spirit of Squirrel Girl's slightly self-mocking comic book appearances, it looks like we could actually be getting a live-action version of the furry lady. Not long after the news that the Runaways were heading to Hulu, TVLine is reporting that Marvel and ABC Studios are developing a New Warriors series focusing on Squirrel Girl. The half-hour comedy is currently being shopped to various cable channels and streaming platforms.
Not to be confused with the New Avengers or the Young Avengers, the New Warriors are a teen superhero team that originally included Nova, Marvel Boy and Firestar under the lead of Night Trasher. They first appeared in 1989 in The Mighty Thor #411 and went through several iterations, with today's lineup featuring Gauntlet, Justice, Komodo, Night Thrasher, Rage, Scarlet Spider, Slapstick, Tigra and Ultragirl.

They actually tie in quite nicely with the MCU, considering that when they fought Nitro and he exploded, the number of civilian deaths was one of the factors that triggered the Civil War and the conflict around the Superhuman Registration Act.
Who Is Squirrel Girl?
As for Squirrel Girl — she's not actually a member of the New Warriors, even though she was meant to join them before writer Fabian Nicieza left Marvel Comics. A teen superhero with squirrel-like abilities — don't laugh, she's actually super flexible and stealthy — she first ambushed Iron Man in hopes of becoming his sidekick.
Her notable achievements include defeating Thanos in a Christmas special of the Great Lakes Avengers, providing the comic relief version of the Avengers, dating Wolverine and babysitting Luke Cage and Jessica Jones's daughter, Danielle. She's also hung out with Deadpool and Spider-Man, and she's quite a popular character after all!
Anna Kendrick Vs. Shannon Purser
The question is, if this series is actually happening, could we really see Kendrick playing Squirrel Girl? If the 31-year-old is tired of playing teenagers, she could leave her spot to Shannon Purser. The budding actress, whom you might know as Barb from Netflix's surprise hit Stranger Things, recently revealed on Twitter that she wouldn't mind playing the character either.
While Purser just joined Riverdale, the CW's Archie reboot, she would actually make a pretty convincing Squirrel Girl.
