After seasons spent on their going their own ways, all four Marvel/Netflix shows have melded into one, The Defenders, and it's chock full of Easter eggs. Apart from all the Marvel Comics references and nods to the MCU, the show also featured a surprise cameo from the man who had a hand in bringing all these characters to life, Stan Lee, because what would a Marvel show be without a little Lee?
All of Lee’s stealth cameos in the Marvel #Netflix shows are fun Easter Eggs to the fans, but it's nice to see that the trend has continued in #TheDefenders, where Lee's mustachioed visage is still popping up in some of the most unlikely places. Truth be told, it's always great to see how Marvel TV shows and movies pay homage to one of the Marvel greats who helped create a lot of the characters we love by placing him in the surprising cameo roles.
Stan Lee Has A Blink-And-You-Miss-It Cameo In The Defenders
During The Defenders Episode 3, Matt Murdock is tailing his new client, Jessica Jones, through the streets of New York City. In several different shots, there are banners hanging from posts along the street which feature the friendly face of the NYPD, none of than Lee himself. In the picture above, you can see Lee in the top left corner, over Matt Murdock’s right shoulder.
In the past decade, Lee has made in appearance in almost every Marvel film, and he has become a staple character in the #MCU. While the Marvel Netflix shows technically exist in the MCU, they don’t crossover – not yet anyway. However, Lee Has appeared in all of the Marvel Netflix shows, but they are a lot less obvious than his movie cameos.
Stan Lee's Previous Marvel Netflix Cameos Are Just As Tough To Spot
In #Daredevil, Lee’s picture was featured on the plaque of an NYPD station (which can be seen in the picture above), and he appears to be a decorated officer who has become the poster boy for the New York Police Department.
- Jessica Jones
Lee’s cameo in #JessicaJones involved the same plaque as shown in Daredevil, and can be seen in several scenes that take place inside the police station. In the picture above, you can see Lee’s picture on the wall just above the right side of the man’s head.
- Luke Cage
Lee’s character in the Marvel Netflix Universe started to branch out after his appearance in Jessica Jones, and began appearing on NYPD "See something, say something"-style posters. The picture above from #LukeCage shows one of these posters in Harlem, and Lee’s handsome mug appears to have become the face of the NYPD.
- Iron Fist
#IronFist also featured an NYPD poster starring Stan Lee, but this one is little different than the one featured in Luke Cage. This new poster seems to be another advertisement for the NYPD, but the only legible words are "Be Proud."
The Marvel Netflix shows have established a continuity that exist somewhat outside of the MCU. It’s unclear if the two universes will ever crossover, but that doesn’t mean that Lee can’t exist in both universes — or in every universe if Marvel wants to go that route. For now, his presence in the Marvel Netflix universe is a welcome treat and a fun way to see how Lee is still included in the world he knows and loves.
