Runaways is the latest to grace Marvel's ever-growing roster of comic book shows, and its launch on Hulu is fast approaching. Based on the groundbreaking comic from 2003, it'll center on an ensemble of six teens who join forces against their evil parents. They later discover their own unique abilities, all while trying to figure out their place in the world.
While gearing up for its release, Entertainment Weekly has given us the first look at the characters. As expected, the cast closely resembles their comic book counterparts, which should definitely bring back nostalgia for its readers.
The gallery includes pics of the full team, as well as their parents and individual character portraits...
With a dark atmosphere and her typical goth attire, this couldn't be a more accurate depiction of Nico (Lyrica Okano). In the comics, she's the daughter of dark wizards, and has therefore inherited their mystical capabilities. She's also known for using the Staff of One, which gives her the ability cast spells and bend magic. As for the show, Nico is an aspiring Wiccan — does the photo above imply that she'll conjure spells in a way we're not familiar with?
Throughout the course of Runaways Season 1, Karolina (Virginia Gardner) is overwhelmed by expectations from her parents, but she'll discover a willingness to explore her identity. As one of #Marvel's most notable lesbian characters, we're expecting the show to give us LGBTQ representation with her character.
Karolina is also part of the Majesdanian alien race, which gives her the ability to manipulate solar light. It'll be surreal to witness her rainbow-like glow come to life when Runaways makes its debut.
Chase (Gregg Sulkin) may look appropriately like a typical dumb jock, but deep down he has an untapped talent in engineering, just like his father (who, in the comics, was very abusive). He eventually discovers that his parents have created advanced, scientific gadgets, which become essential to Chase's role as the "getaway guy." Even knowing he's the most rebellious member of the group, he always remains loyal to them.
Regarding the rest of the team, Alex Wilder (Rhenzy Feliz) is shown sporting one of his exact graphic tees from the comics. The video game enthusiast is known for his intellect and logic, which have helped get the group out of life-threathening obstacles. As for Gert Yorkes (Ariela Barer), Runaways got her purple hair right, and hopefully they'll do her sarcastic nature justice as well.
We don't know much about Molly Hernandez's (Allegra Acosta) characterization, but she happens to be the Runaways' youngest and most innocent member.
Runaways will be available to stream on Hulu on November 21. What do you think of the first looks at the characters? Let us know in the comments!
