As we approach the premiere of the seventh season of FX's hit horror series, American Horror Story, we more details about the cast of Cult, the next installment in the anthology universe, are escaping into the wild like, well, people fleeing a cult. Fans will be disappointed, however, with the latest news: #KathyBates, the star of previous seasons, will not return for the upcoming season.
The 69-year-old actress has been on the show since its third season, always playing a key role in each story, whether as the manager of the spirit and vampire-infested Hotel Cortez, or the spirit of a cruel New Orleans socialite famous for torturing slaves during her life.
Due to a scheduling conflict with her upcoming Netflix comedy Disjointed, however, Bates is unable to participate in the production of the horror series' seventh season. Disjointed, created by Two and a Half Men originator Chuck Lorre, will follow her character as she hires her recently graduated son and a team of weed cultivators to run a Los Angeles marijuana dispensary. Disjointed is set to premiere on August 25.
While her absence will certainly be felt by fans of the show, Cult will still feature the return of many veteran actors for the series, including fan-favorites Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters alongside Frances Connor, Cheyenne Jackson and Mare Winningham. The Ryan Murphy series will return to FX on September 5, moving from its usual Wednesday night time slot to Tuesday nights.
