Modern Family is undoubtedly one of most successful comedies on television in recent times having won an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in each of its first six seasons. In spite of losing out to Veep last year, Modern Family is back in contention to win it again this year, having picked up yet another nomination along with the only other nominee from the show this year, Ty Burrell. Burrell is the only actor from the talented ensemble who has managed to pick up eight nominations for each of the eight seasons, having won twice. However, it all could have turned out to be very different.
#MattLeBlanc, who is best known from playing Joey Tribbiani from Friends, had the chance to play Phil Dunphy on screen. However, LeBlanc turned down the role as he felt he wouldn't do the part justice. In a recent interview with USA Today, this is what LeBlanc had to say:
"I remember reading it thinking, this is a really good script, (but) I'm not the guy for this. I'd be doing the project an injustice to take this. I know what I can do, I know what I can't do. Plus, I'm having too much fun laying on the couch."
Modern Family is currently filming its ninth season and after all these years it's impossible to imagine different actors playing these beloved characters. That being said, the show could have looked even more different—it could have been a mini #Friends reunion. Turns out LeBlanc wasn't the only Friends alum who had been approached for a role. Lisa Kudrow was one of the frontrunners for the role of Phil's wife, Claire.
While we would have loved to see these two back together on the small screen, we are glad it didn't happen. It would have been very hard to see them as Phil and Claire Dunphy. In the back of the of the viewers' minds, they would still be Joey Tribbiani and Phoebe Buffay.
Ty Burrell grabbed the opportunity with both hands and made the most out of it and, from the sounds of it, LeBlanc has no regrets about it. Two years after turning down the Modern Family role, he went on to play himself in his critically-acclaimed Episodes. LeBlanc hasn't done too badly for himself, winning a Golden Globe for his work. And while he might have passed on the role of Phil Dunphy, he's currently playing the role of lovable husband and a father to three kids on Man with a Plan, the second season of which premieres this fall.
