With the highly-anticipated third Avengers film set for 2018, fans are eagerly waiting to see literally all of the major MCU characters that have been introduced since Phase 1 come together on the big screen for the first time. But with all the amazing superheroes confirmed to appear, there is one character whose name has been suspiciously absent: Nick Fury. The eye-patch-wearing Director of S.H.I.E.L.D played a prominent role in early MCU films, but has since disappeared off the face of the Marvel movies after Age of Ultron.
Although it has been confirmed that Nick Fury would reprise his role in the '90s-set film Captain Marvel, his absence has still been quite noticeable in some recent major MCU films, like Captain America: Civil War. His name was even left out of the roster of characters that were confirmed to appear in #AvengersInfinityWar and the fourth untitled Avengers movie. Now, that seems to be changing as we consider new information that might tease Nick Fury's visible return to the MCU.
Samuel L. Jackson Wasn't Pleased Marvel Suddenly Ditched Nick Fury
No one was happy about Nick Fury's sudden exclusion from the MCU, least of all Samuel L. Jackson, who plays the iconic Marvel character. Speaking to Yahoo Movies this August, he stated:
"I’m not in ‘Avengers 3 and 4.' They’re shooting them now, and they haven’t called me yet. They wouldn’t let me go to ‘Black Panther’-ville, so it’s kinda like how you gonna make a black Marvel movie and not let Nick Fury show up in it?!”
Jackson's keen interest to reprise his role in upcoming Marvel films must have been heard because a new casting call published by AJC seems to indicate that he will be returning for an upcoming #MCU film. The casting call is reportedly looking for photo doubles for an African-American man in the 30s-50s age range who has a goatee, is bald and is about 6’2” to 6’4”. This perfectly fits with Jackson's characterization of the popular comics character save for his age, since the actor is 68-years-old in real life. Having said that, age is not often a big factor whilst casting doubles, since whoever is cast could be asked to play a younger version of the actor (maybe linking the Avengers to Captain Marvel?) or asked to stand in for an actor for a special effects or action scene.
What Nick Fury's Involvement Could Mean For The Avengers Story
This is certainly good news for fans who have wanted to see the badass S.H.I.E.L.D leader return to the big screen but this could also mean that we may see some link between Captain Marvel and the fourth Avengers film as the former is the most recent film Jackson is supposed to star in. It's possible that the heroes that were already divided after the events of Civil War may become even more segregated following the events of Avengers 4, which may ignite the need for Nick Fury to reunite them. This would certainly make sense, given that Nick Fury was the one who formed the team in the first place.
Infinity War and Avengers 4 are no doubt MCU's most ambitious projects to date. They are the closing act of the three previous phases of the MCU and it may even serve as the birthplace of a new phase. If Nick Fury will indeed be in the fourth Avengers film — as this casting call seems to suggest — it would most likely be to either give him a proper send off, to see him act as the connective tissue between MCU films, or reunite the separated superheroes. No matter how he comes back, it will no doubt be great to see such a key character like him come back for one more adventure.
