The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to get a whole lot bigger thanks to Captain Marvel. The heroine's solo film will delve deeper into the intergalactic side of the franchise, exploring the Kree and the Skrulls, two of the most popular alien races in Marvel comics. Fans were incredibly excited to learn that the Skrulls would be brought to life in the MCU, and that they would also act as the main pains in the neck for Carol Danvers.

During , Marvel revealed some concept art from the film. The pieces offered our first look at the Skrulls, but the images were focused almost entirely on our new galactic heroine, so it was hard to make out the details of the new villains.

Fortunately now we know exactly how the race of shape-shifting deceivers will look like –– and they're pretty intimidating. Jerad Marantz, an artist who's worked with Marvel Studios in the past, created part of the concept art shown during Comic-Con.

Marantz shared three images that give us our best look at the . Check them out (click on the right to scroll through more pics):

Captain Marvel is one brave superhero for taking on those guys. I love the design. It stays faithful to how the race looks in the comics, while giving it a modern twist.

There is a funny backstory for the revelation of these images, because the artist thought they had leaked during Comic-Con, as he detailed in the caption:

"Honored to find out this morning that my designs were shown by the at At first I was afraid that the artwork got leaked and I was a bit panicked, but fortunately it was done on purpose. I did these designs while working in house at on for the very talented Andy Park. You should all check out his Captain Marvel design. It was also released and is amazing! "

One thing that caught my attention was the Super-Skrull. In case you're not caught up on your comic book lore, the Super-Skrulls are some of the most powerful members of their race. If their smaller versions are tough, these guys take the cake. They have superhuman strength, stamina, the ability to fly, and to top it all off, they're immune to detection from the likes of Doctor Strange's powers and Spider-Man's semi-reliable spider sense. Basically, odds are you won't see them coming if you're on their radar.

What surprised me about seeing the character in the concept art is that, while Fox and Marvel share the rights to the Skrulls, Fox has the rights to a Super-Skrull known as Kl'rt, who possesses the powers of the Fantastic Four, and he's arguably the most famous version of his race. With that in mind, it will be exciting to see which heroes' abilities the takes with the Fantastic Four out of play.

We'll get to see both versions of the Skrulls in action when Captain Marvel flies into theaters on March 8, 2019.
