Even if you loved the entire series, you wouldn't be wrong in arguing that Jon Bernthal's indomitable #FrankCastle (Punisher) was one of the best things about #Daredevil Season 2. And now, due to overwhelmingly popular demand, the violent vigilante returns with his very own Netflix series next year.
News has been fairly thin on the ground regarding said upcoming show, #ThePunisher, as we all got distracted by the debut of the long awaited #LukeCage and the next-to-release Iron Fist, which arrives on #Netflix March 17, 2017.
But the cogs are turning over at The Punisher camp now, with #Marvel recently confirming that Season 1 is set to release sometime in the latter half of 2017. And over the past month or so the show has added five new cast members to the already impressive roster — read on to discover more about these newcomers, and the characters they'll be portraying.
1. Daniel Webber as Lewis Walcott
"A young veteran who has had a difficult time re-assimilating into Civilian Society."
Daniel Webber — best known for his portrayal of the infamous shooter Lee Harvey Oswald in the Hulu adaptation of Stephen King's 11.22.63 — joins The Punisher cast as young veteran Lewis Walcott.
A new character for the TV show, Walcott sounds like he's going to act as a mirror of sorts to #FrankCastle, perhaps someone who Castle recognizes is going through the same processes he did when attempting to hang up his military past.
His character description also echoes current discourse about the difficulty veterans have when returning from the field. The question is, will Castle take him under his wing, or will Walcott end up becoming just another statistic?
2. Jason R. Moore as Curtis Hoyle
"A friend of Frank Castle’s and one of the few people who knows he is alive."
Jason R. Moore — known for The Sorcerer's Apprentice and A Lonely Place for Dying — joins The Punisher cast as Curtis Hoyle.
Curtis Hoyle as he's known in the comics is a fairly minor character — a US Army lieutenant who first encountered Frank Castle during the Vietnam war. They meet again as enemies back in the US years later, when Hoyle hooks up with the drug running Rockhouse Operation.
It sounds like we'll be getting a very different take on Hoyle for The Punisher though, as Marvel describe him as a friend and confidant of Frank Castle. Perhaps he's another old army buddy?
3. Paul Schulze as Rawlins
"A high-ranking member of the CIA whose operations in Afghanistan intersect with Frank Castle."
Paul Schulze — known for Nurse Jackie and Panic Room — joins The Punisher cast as Rawlins, a high-ranking CIA agent whose path crosses with that of Frank Castle.
This character seems to be a version of William "Bill" Rawlins from the Punisher MAX universe. The comic book Rawlins is a ruthless, corrupt CIA agent who had his hands in terrorist cells and drug running, and lost an eye to Frank Castle as retaliation for trying to organize his death.
Oh, and Rawlins also pushed his then-wife and CIA agent Kathryn O'Brien out of a helicopter on their honeymoon rather than jettison the shipment of heroin he was carrying, so you know he's a swell guy.
4. Jaime Ray Newman as Sarah Lieberman
"Micro’s wife, whose marriage has made her life far more complicated."
Jaime Ray Newman — known for General Hospital and Veronica Mars — joins The Punisher cast as Sarah Lieberman, wife of David "Micro" Lieberman (portrayed by Ebon Moss-Bachrach).
Micro is an ally of Frank Castle, operating as his weapons and technology dealer, and Sarah Lieberman is another all new character for the show, as Micro was never married in the comics (that we knew of). However, in the comics Micro does eventually turn against Castle, so should we be suspicious of him and Sarah?
Despite the lack of information about Sarah Lieberman beyond her marital status, she's slated to appear in all 13-episodes so she'll probably turn out to be pretty important.
5. Michael Nathanson as Sam Stein
"A Homeland agent who is challenged by his partnership with Dinah."
Michael Nathanson — known for The Wolf of Wall Street and Side Effects — joins The Punisher cast as Sam Stein, Homeland Security Agent who is partnered with Dinah Madani (portrayed by Amber Rose Revah).
Another new character for the show, Sam Stein is described as "somewhat disillusioned with his job." He'll be working closely with fellow agent and partner Dinah Madani, another new character created for The Punisher.
Dinah sounds like she's going to be the Misty Knight to Frank Castle's Luke Cage in this series — a high powered and challenging Homeland Security Agent with her sights set on capturing the Punisher. And it looks like Sam Stein will be along for that ride whether he likes it or not.
