Michael Rooker's Yondu was a standout in the first Guardians of the Galaxy in a considerably small role. James Gunn then brought the character back for a much more significant role in #GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol2.
But aside from the hefty dose of comedy and much-needed family drama that Rooker brought to the film, he contributed to a scene that will most likely go down as one of the greatest in the #MCU: during the Guardians' fight against Ego the Living Planet, Peter Quill and #Yondu are descending together. Quill, being the sarcastic movie buff we love, jokingly tells Yondu that he looks like #MaryPoppins.
Taking into account how Yondu is ... well, an alien, he wasn't aware of Mary Poppins, and he asked Quill one thing: was he cool? Peter followed along, and told him he was. Feeling inspired, Yondu proudly proclaimed:
"I'm Mary Poppins, y'all!"
In light of that, Yondu himself, Michael Rooker, is joining the fun.
Yondu Meets Mary Poppins
The grumpy head of the Ravagers made his dreams come true by meeting Mary Poppins. Rooker posted a picture on Instagram of himself, next to a lady dressed as the famous character:
In the caption, Rooker poked fun at the character, stating:
"She's Mary Poppins y'all... just kidding... I'm Mary Poppins y'all, Yondu, 'GoTG Vol.2.'"
We learned throughout both #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy movies that, beneath all that bravado and meanness, Yondu is quite the softy at heart, so it's nice to see him meeting his idol.
Michael Rooker Really Loves The GoTG Vol. 2 Mary Poppins Reference
Aside from finally meeting his hero, Michael Rooker has made a habit of expressing his fondness for his association with the character on social media. He's shown off a Mary Poppins/Yondu Funko Pop! figure...
He's promoted a cookie with his now iconic line "I'm Mary Poppins Y'all!"
There was also the time he went all out and posted a Mary Poppins poster featuring Yondu in the main role, accompanied by a caption that jokingly expressed his desire to play the classic nanny in a future film adaptation:
To be honest, I can't imagine Yondu teaching children about respect, tolerance or good manners as efficiently as Mary Poppins. Any attempt at that would probably not go well.
It's good to know Michael Rooker is taking such a liking to his newfound association with Poppins. After all, people will probably have a hard time separating the two for awhile after watching GoTG Vol. 2.
