is right around the corner. This being the penultimate movie dealing with cosmic themes in the MCU before Infinity War, we expect to have some exciting surprises in store for us.

James Gunn previously talked about the movie largely being a contained story apart from the all the craziness going on in the MCU. But seeing his track record of incredible Easter Eggs and details, it's hard to not expect a great new inclusion to the lore through his newest entry in the Guardians' franchise.

Fortunately for all of us, he's not letting us down. sat down for an interview on the Adam Carolla Show. In it, he revealed that two characters that are key players in the Marvel Universe will be showing up in the movie:

"We do have a couple of characters who are very important to the Marvel Universe who are going to make their debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which people don't know about,"

So, who will be playing these pivotal characters? Rocky Balboa and everyone's favorite version of Lex Luthor. According to the director, this match made in heaven will be working together:

"Sylvester Stallone plays one of these friend Michael Rosenbaum also has a pretty decent role in the movie as well and it sort of works in tandem with Sly's character."

Last year, it was rumored that Stallone would be playing a Ravager. But given how the director describes him as a "key" character, and the Ravager's largely small role in the previous film, him being part of Yondu's crew doesn't seem likely.

But 's casting is very curious for two reasons: First, because before Chris Pratt was cast, Rosenbaum was actually on the shortlist of actors to play the dance-loving character. And second, simply because it's funny to think that Lex Luthor - who always craved power and being better - is finally traveling to the final frontier. And he will be a major player.

Speculating on who an actor might be playing in a superhero movie is always a difficult task. In the case of , his characteristics make finding a similar comic book match for him a little tough. Especially because James Gunn showed us with the inclusion of Ego the Living Planet as Star-Lord's daddy that he likes to throw curve balls at us in regards to casting and story elements.

With that said, there is one character that Michael Rosenbaum could be playing. Someone we've wanted to see on the big screen ever since the first Guardians of the Galaxy hit theaters: :

Warlock in has been a contentious subject for comic book fans, simply because we have no real idea whether or not he'll appear in it, or even in the MCU at all. I mean, yes, we've gotten a few hints, such as his cocoon bursting at the end of GoTG and Gunn responding this to the question of if the film's new baddie, Ayesha and Warlock were related, like in the comics:

"Totally possible. They’re created in pods."

But there's no hard evidence to suggest it (apart from Rosenbaum kinda looking like the character, except, you know, without hair). Michael Rosenbaum is a fantastic actor, with great depth and charisma, so it would be amazing to see him play such an important player in the grand scheme of things of the .

Still, this is mere speculation, and like I said, given Gunn's penchant for surprises, the actors' mystery roles are hard to pin down. What's not speculation though, is that Stallone and Rosenbaum are playing key characters. For their identity, we'll have to wait to know for sure. Fortunately, it won't be a long time, because the film is hitting theaters in less than two months, on May 5, 2017.
